About the Item

An important and most handsome French 19th century Louis XV st. Kingwood, Tulipwood and Ormolu desk, modeled after Charles Cressent. This stunning Bureau Plat desk is attributed to cabinetmaker E. Kahn & Cie, and is raised by four impressive cabriole legs with wrap around Ormolu sabots accented with acanthus leaves, and a front cabochon. Delicate chutes lead from the sabots to the top of each leg, which are richly decorated with female maiden mounts above acanthus leaves. The scalloped frieze displays a central recessed drawer with a foliate keyhole escutcheon flanked by scrolled branches, and impressive scrolled acanthus leaf Ormolu mounts to each side. To each side are most unique stacked drawers fitted with scrolled asymmetric Ormolu handles and their original locks, while being set within mottled Ormolu frames. The sides of the desk display elegant quarter veneered Tulipwood panels set within mottled Ormolu frames and centered by stately mounts of Hercules wearing a lion skin. Above the mounts are wide fitted leather pull outs with gold tooling, before the gold tooled leather top surrounded by a mottled Ormolu edge guard with four foliate corner mounts.
