About the Item

Huge 98" long John Van Koert for Drexel Profile walnut and pecan Model K44 Extending Dining Table, circa 1950s. The rectangular low profile and streamlined table comes with (3) 12" leaves that allow the table to go from 62" to 98" long. This massive, sturdy table extends out with heavy duty rigid metal glides. The table is straight as an arrow with no sags, even when all three leaves are in. Built like a tank but still captivating, minimal and stylish. Each end features a bow-tie style skirt that adds a subtle touch of modern flare. There are no abrupt angles in this substantial Profile table.  The tapered legs curve gracefully into the table surface.  The sculptured look is emphasized by a gentle curve that joins the top, extending slightly outward on both ends. Drexel Furniture's "Profile" line was designed by John van Koert and released in mid-1955. van Koert was already well-known at the time for designing Towle's "Contour" line of cutlery, as well as Drexel "Projection." He was also the director of "Design in Scandinavia," a traveling museum exhibition that went around the United States showcasing pieces from 1954-1957 and helped spark the US interest in Danish design. The extensive Profile group has great poise and although contemporary in spirit, is adaptable and answers the demand for furniture that neither fakes the spirit of a past style nor merely expresses a designer's whim.  Please note, the leaves and table sections have varying color tones. The leaves were most likely stored away from light and have a slightly darker tone. 62" - 98" long (total) with leaves x 40 wide x 29.5" H (3) 12" leaves
