About the Item

Dining table and 6 chairs by Marc Held for IBM, 1983 Rare furniture designed by Marc Held for the refectory of the IBM house in Montpellier/La Lande. Composed of 6 chairs that can be nested on a table with a satin white melamine top, this set was created for IBM by one of the five designers who, in 1983, refurbished the private flats of the President of the Republic at the Elysée Palace. The table has a beech and black lacquered steel frame, a white melamine top and solid beech edges and has 6 places to hang the 6 chairs. The chairs are made of thermo-moulded laminate with spruce and maple veneer, compass base in beech, a metal half-ring under the seat for hanging on the table. Marc Held is an architect and designer. His work has been described as ranging from spoons to factories, from homes to cars, from skiwear to porcelain... Although her studio was for a long time based in Paris, her design creations have been shown and sold all over the world. Many of his works are exhibited in contemporary art museums and some rare pieces now appear - when discovered - in major public sales. Today, Marc Held devotes most of his thinking to the relationship between popular architecture and modernity. Joining practice to theory, he designs and builds a few rare houses for which he conceives the architecture, gardens and furniture, following the example of his illustrious predecessors: Mies van de Rohe, Corbusier, Aalto, Jacobsen.

Set of 4 Oak Chairs with White Fabric Seat by René Gabriel, 1950s
By Rene Gabriel
Located in PARIS, FR
Set of 4 oak chairs with white fabric seat by René Gabriel, 1950s René Gabriel (1899 - 1950) is a precursor of French industrial design. He was one of the first to create, as early as the 1930s, economical mass-produced furniture combining aestheticism, robustness and sobriety, a source of inspiration for a whole generation of future designers. A student at the Germain Pilon School and then at the National School of Decorative Arts, René Gabriel began as a domino maker by designing and producing his own wallpapers, and then made his mark as a decorative artist in most of the salons and international exhibitions of the inter-war period. In 1927, he began his research into the creation of mass-produced furniture and proposed a piece of furniture composed of juxtaposable and superposable elements. He studied an economical version that he presented in 1934 at the Salon des arts ménagers under the name of RG elements. Another major turning point came in 1944, when the Ministry of Reconstruction and Urban Planning commissioned him to create emergency furniture. A fervent advocate of furniture for all, René Gabriel designed numerous models for disaster victims by establishing close ties with industry. He also collaborated with Auguste Perret...

Desk in Oak and Oak Plywood by Marcel Gascoin, 1949
By Marcel Gascoin
Located in PARIS, FR
Desk in oak and oak plywood by Marcel Gascoin, 1949 Marcel Gascoin is the main representative of a French design born after the Second World War, with the reconstruction of destroyed cities. Born in Le Havre in 1907, the young Marcel followed in the footsteps of his father - workshop manager in a practical school, carpentry section - by attending the applied arts section of the École des Beaux-Arts du Havre, then the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. There he met Henri Sauvage who encouraged him to turn to modern furniture. He became a carpenter and cabinetmaker, and from then on he never ceased to adapt the container to the content, as he said himself. Recommended by Robert Mallet-Stevens in 1930, he participated in the exhibition of the Union of Modern Artists. Four years later, he participated in a competition for the design of a boat cabin, which allowed him to meet Jean Prouvé, with whom he would work. In 1938, he participated in the Salon des Arts Ménagers and created a line of storage furniture with a particular design that found an echo in Scandinavian countries. In the aftermath of the war, his links with Raoul Dautry and Claudius Petit, ministers in charge of reconstruction, allowed him to play an important role in the production of furniture with a small footprint, by adapting the techniques proven in boat cabins. In 1947, he became commissioner of the International Exhibition of Urbanism and Housing. He coordinated the construction of model apartments (Sotteville-Lès-Rouen) and met the architect Marcel Lods. It was also at this time that Marcel Gascoin and his collaborators saw their ideas prevail by adapting to the greatest number of people, for the mass production of apartments (model of apartment in Le Havre - Architect Auguste Perret...
