About the Item

Osvaldo Borsani Art Deco dining table for Arredamenti Borsani Varedo, walnut, Italy, 1935 A study in sculptural elegance and architectural precision. Designed by Osvaldo Borsani in 1935 for Arredamenti Borsani Varedo, this dining table is an exceptional example of early Italian modernism infused with the luxurious vocabulary of Art Deco. The curved pedestal legs, with their fluted detailing and dynamic tension, support a thick rectangular top whose chamfered profile echoes the streamlined geometries of the era. The lower stretcher, composed of a series of closely spaced wooden rods, adds rhythm and depth — a functional ornament that reveals the meticulous craftsmanship of the Borsani atelier. The walnut veneer, rich in pattern and tone, amplifies the materiality of the piece, bridging decorative grace and structural clarity. This table stands at the intersection of tradition and experimentation, foreshadowing the rationalist language that Borsani would fully embrace in the postwar decades. A rare prewar piece that speaks volumes about the evolution of Italian design, well before the boom of the 1950s. Osvaldo Borsani (1911–1985) was a pivotal figure in 20th-century design. Trained as an architect at the Politecnico di Milano, he combined a rigorous approach to form with a passion for innovation. Alongside his twin brother Fulgenzio, he led the family business Arredamenti Borsani Varedo, which evolved into the iconic brand Tecno in the 1950s. His early works — like this dining table — reveal a deep sensitivity to proportion, material, and the fusion of art and industry.
