19th Century French Renaissance Writing Table, Student Desk
Located in Dallas, TX
19th Century French Renaissance writing table ~ student desk is a remarkable example of the furniture maker's craft, performed on a diminutive scale perfect for townhomes, apartments, libraries, studies, and a student's bedroom! Created entirely from old growth oak, it was literally designed to last for centuries. A single steel pendant pull for the drawer is the only other material used. Hand-carved bas relief covers the entire half-bullnose bevel around the perimeter, underneath a subtle ogee bevel surrounding the solid plank top. Another tier of ogee trim in reverse appears under the carved edging, and that's just the surface! The apron is a marvel of wood sculpting, with elaborate scrollwork and stylized naturalistic foliates in glorious full relief appearing on all four facades, framed by amazingly lifelike full relief busts...

If you are looking at this listing then the chance are you know who Galle is and are familiar with his work, if not please find below a brief history on the great man. The table depicts a lovely woodland scene with trees in the background and branches in the foreground In terms of the condition, it is sublime, it really is sublime Dimensions Height 51.5cm Width 43.5cm Depth 38.5cm Please note all measurements are taken at the widest point, if you would like any additional or specific measurements please ask. Gallé was the son of a faience and furniture manufacturer and studied philosophy, botany, and drawing in his youth. He later learned glassmaking at Meisenthal and came to work at his father's factory in Nancy following the Franco-Prussian War. His early work was executed using clear glass decorated with enamel, but he soon turned to an original style featuring heavy, opaque glass carved or etched with plant motifs, often in two or more colours as cameo glass. His friend and patron Robert de Montesquiou sent him to Bayreuth with a recommendation to Cosima Wagner, which led to a great enthusiasm for Parsifal. In 1875, he married Henriette Grimm (1848-1914). In 1877, he then assumed his father’s role as director of the Maison Gallé-Reinemer. In that same year, he was elected Secretary-General for the Société centrale d’horticulture de Nancy. His career took off after his work received praise at the Paris Exhibition of 1878. Within a decade of another successful showing at the Paris Exhibition of 1889, Gallé had reached international fame and his style, with its emphasis on naturalism and floral motifs, was at the forefront of the emerging Art Nouveau movement. He continued to incorporate experimental techniques into his work, such as metallic foils and air bubbles, and also revitalized the glass industry by establishing a workshop to mass-produce his, and other artists', designs. The factory would employ 300 workers and artisans at its height, including the notable glassmaker Eugène Rosseau, and remained in operation until 1936. Gallé wrote a book on art...

Vintage Drexel Heritage Hispana Brutalist Walnut Nightstand Chest Side Table
Located in Dayton, OH
"Vintage Hispana Drexel Heritage low chest, nightstand or side table, circa 1960s. Made of walnut featuring two drawers with paneled fronts, brass knocker pulls, and turned bun feet. Item number 493-312-6. Drexel Furniture Company was established 1903 in Drexel, North Carolina. Although Samuel Huffman managed the enterprise, he and five other men founded the business with an investment of $14,000. By 1935, Sam Huffman died, and his son Robert O. Huffman became president. The younger Huffman made several changes in operations, including manufacturing medium-priced furniture instead of low-priced and spending more on advertising. By 1950, Drexel had grown from a small factory of fifty workers who made dressers and washstands to being a leading manufacturer in traditional and modern furniture. In the process, the company had partnered with other manufacturers to create new product lines. In 1951, for instance, Drexel acquired Table Rock Furniture and Heritage Furniture Company, and in 1956, Morganton Furniture Company. By 1957, Drexel employed 2,300 workers, and its furniture was sold nationwide in approximately 2,500 stores. By the late 1960s, the company manufactured laboratory, dormitory and hospital...

Vintage, New and Antique End Tables

Beyond just providing additional tabletop space for your living room, an attractive vintage end table can help you organize as well as display books and decorative objects.

The term “end table” is frequently used interchangeably with “coffee table,” and while these two furnishings have much in common, each offers their own distinctive benefits in your space.

Your end table is likely going to stand as tall as the arms of your sofa, and its depth will match the seating. These attributes allow for tucking the table neatly at the end of your sofa in order to provide an elevated surface between your seating and the wall. End tables are accent pieces — they’re a close cousin to side tables, but side tables, not unlike the show-stealing low-profile coffee table, are intended to be positioned prominently and have more to do with the flow and design of a room than an end table, which does a great job but does it out of the way of everything else.

End tables with a drawer or a shelf can easily stow away books or television remotes. Living-room end tables frequently assist with lighting, specifically as they’re often positioned adjacent to a wall. Their height and compact tabletop render them ideal for table lamps and plants, particularly if parked near a window.

And given their practicality, there is no shortage of simple, streamlined end tables from mid-century modern favorites such as Baker Furniture Company, Dunbar and Knoll that will serve your clutter-clearing minimalist efforts or wide-open loft space well. But over the years, furniture designers have taken to venturesome experimentation, crafting tables from fallen trees, introducing organic shapes and playing with sculptural forms, so much so that your understated end table might eventually become the centerpiece of a room, no matter where you choose to place it. One-of-a-kind contemporary designs prove that there are endless options for what an end table can be, while furniture makers working in the Art Deco style have proven that end tables can be stacked, staggered and nested at will, creating all kinds of variations on this popular home accent.

Find an extraordinary variety of antique, new and vintage end tables on 1stDibs today.
