About the Item

Square-plan game table with four truncated pyramidal legs; the top inserted in a frame has a release spring that allows, either to remove it to access the storage compartment inserted in the band, or to flip it over to position the side covered by the game cloth. The frame where the top is housed is inlaid with a ribbon fret. The top has a large central quadripartite guinea walnut reserve held by an inlaid frame with a succession of leaf motifs flanked by four wide borders containing alternating acanthus leaf motifs; in the corners four small square reserves contain flowering rosettes. The table is veneered in guinea walnut, bois de rose, mahogany, walnut burl, maple, boxwood. As well documented by Giuseppe Beretti in the early 19th century, Giuseppe Maggiolini's workshop found itself producing an important number of game tables, both for private requests and for the Napoleonic court. There are mainly two types, the opening tables, with the top that doubles, and the square or rectangular ones with the folding top, such as this one described. A spring allows the plane housed in the frame to be unhooked and thus turned onto the playing surface. The decoration that dominantly adorns this top is the elegant border with this play of acanthus leaves that follow one another and alternate. In the "Maggiolini Fund," kept in the Drawings Cabinet of the Castello Sforzesco, the drawing of this motif is preserved, cataloged FM A 347. This is actually a motif taken from a proposal by Albertolli that was also published in the collection of "Various Ornaments...," printed in 1782. In 1807 the Bottega Maggiolini will have to cope with a request for the Royal Palace in Monza, for a very large number of similar tables, today there are still about thirty preserved, and this is the reason why in the Maggiolini Fund a large number of drawings referring to these game tables are preserved. Executive quality as always is high and distinctive of the production.
