About the Item

This late nineteenth century French elm workbench from the region of Normandy features a hand turned wooden screw with a wooden vise grip on the left side that can be positioned so that a bar towel can be hung from it. A slot at the back was originally used to hold tools. The workbench is constructed using mortise and tenon joinery with a lower shelf that creates a sturdy frame while also providing display space. A handsome piece with a 2.5 inch thick top, this piece could also function as a unique sofa table or console table, circa 1900.
