Jules Leleu Circular Green Lacquer Two-Tier Side Table, France, 1960s

About the Item

This charming two-tiered, tripodal table is as unusual as it is useful. Its green lacquered top is by Paul-Etienne Saïn and Henri Tambuté. The pair, who met in captivity during the Second World War, carried out lacquer works for prestigious orders for the ocean liners France, Flandres, Provence, Antilles, Liberté, Ile de France, the luxury hotels Meurice, George V in Paris and Hôtel de Paris in Monte-Carlo, and collaborated with great decorators such as Leleu, André Arbus and Raphaël. Numbered. The house of Leleu rose to prominence in the 1920s during the Art Déco period, and became known for the ornate classicism of its richly refined furniture and lavish interiors. In the Postwar years, Leleu décorateurs ensembliers whose design talents encompassed all elements of the interior, from lighting to textiles and carpets, responded to cultural shifts and emerging technologies with innovative pieces which incorporated glass, metal, and the newly discovered Beka lacquer. The palette of materials expanded with time, but Leleu's legendary technique and impeccable attention to detail never wavered.
