Jules Leleu, Pair of Two-Tiered Circular Side Tables, France, c. 1933

About the Item

This pair of two-tiered, mirror topped side tables are notable for their combination of materials (walnut and mirrored glass), as well as a daring assemblage of shapes — three dimensional wedges at their bottoms, the long rectangle at their sides, and the splash of vertical symmetry added by their 'mirrored' circular tops. Each signed in a cartouche. n° 2081 by artist's numbering system. The house of Leleu rose to prominence in the 1920s during the Art Déco period, and became known for the ornate classicism of its richly refined furniture and lavish interiors. In the Postwar years, Leleu décorateurs ensembliers whose design talents encompassed all elements of the interior, from lighting to textiles and carpets, responded to cultural shifts and emerging technologies with innovative pieces which incorporated glass, metal, and the newly discovered Beka lacquer. The palette of materials expanded with time, but Leleu's legendary technique and impeccable attention to detail never wavered.
