Late 18th Century Fine Quality Louis XV French Work Table, Circa 1775
About the Item
Attractive and well made tulip wood on oak with copious kingwood parquetry and marquetry veneered surface; this late 18th century Louis XV french work table had multiple uses; as a sewing table for storage and work required for crochet, embroidery, knitting and other seamstress needs. With the mounted interior mirror and multiple locking devices for the drawers and interior, it could just as easily also have been used as a lady's jewelry or valuables table.
In the classic French traditional design of the period, the graceful cabriole legs, while delicate in design, are sturdy in structure to support the top and double compartment fitted storage area. The brass hinged and slide flip top reveals a mirror set in place to the back. The bottom two drawers are for storage, while the top faux drawer houses the locking mechanism. Note the intricate parquetry herringbone pattern throughout, and the detailed floral marquetry work to the top----exquisite. In addition there is a nicely appointed perimeter inlaid border with a geometric overlapping square pattern to each corner; note the delicate reverse serpentine contoured front; all of this is obviously the work of a very skilled cabinetmaker (see images). Slight surface undulations indicate late 18th century manufacture therefore, Louis XV period and circa 1770's..
The condition is excellent; the surface is original and untouched without restoration; the mirror has some wear (see images) but is also untouched and original; the hardware and locks are original to the piece; and all of the beautiful inlay and veneer intact and sturdy so as to be appropriate in any decorating scheme where this style and size table is desired.

Paul Sormani French Dressing Table Amboyna Veneer (Rare). Circa 1870
By Paul Sormani
Located in Incline Village, NV
Paul Sormani (1817-1877) designed and was the maker of this superb quality small dressing table; from his Paris workshop at 10 R. Charlot Park (this was his second workshop---opened in 1867). The attention to detail and intricate design, in addition to selection and application of premium materials and resources are typical of Sormani dedication to excellence, as was recognized by many of his contemporaries during several mid-century Parisean exhibitions.
Brass inlaid Fleur de Lis medallion decorates the center; surrounded by beautiful and rare burl Amboyna veneer wood from Indonesia. The surface is bordered by a bold brass application to the serpentine perimeter. A satinwood inlaid border decoration to the surface further enhances the decor.
The highly figured veneer design of the surface is further on display to the rectangular 4" skirt support above four elegant cabriole legs with full length linear bold inlaid and applied brass accoutrements to the corners; top to bottom; ending in bronze mounted feet.
The special interior is accessed by lifting the top up connected by a pair of decorated and embossed rear hinges; revealing a full surface mirror back and a fitted storage sections with a sliding tray for personal particulars; jewelry, papers, make up, sewing implements, or valuables as may be kept private by locking mechanism which bears the signature and street address of "Paul Sormani, 10 R. Charlot Park".
The condition of the table is original, sturdy, and well made with no replacements. Surfaces have a mellow patina displaying warm, age related hues. A small rectangular section to the top surface measuring 2" x 3 1/2", just off the left and front of the center medallion is present. It does not look like a replacement because the grain transcends the section matching perfectly. It simply looks like an early restoration of some kind; possibly done contemporaneously with the manufacture of the table and possibly at the workshop of Sormani Maison because it is done so well. Please note the close up image (#3) of this repair. The base of the interior underneath (see image) is fastened with butterfly wood...

Fine Quality Antique French Toy "Dancing Couple", circa 1880, Rare
Located in Incline Village, NV
One of a kind, fine quality antique toy, "Dancing Couples" is of French manufacture, it is marked in raised lettering "A.L. Paris" at the top of the base. It is also very similar to several French toys noted in "Antique Toys" by Jeffrey Levitt, and the young lady's face is almost identical to the bisque face on a French toy referenced on page 209 plate #372.
This outstanding toy consists of two figures, a young man resembling Napoleon Bonaparte, and a young lady, dressed in period clothes with bisque (porcelain) faces and heads and wooden legs. The base is some type of metal composite consisting of a cast lead alloy. The polychromed hand painted blue and red metal dance floor is also a lead alloy. The wire stands supporting the figures is of ferrous metal.
The bisque faces are very lifelike with flesh tones and blue eyes, rosy cheeks to the lady with bisque auburn hair. He is dressed in original period Napoleon type military clothes...
