About the Item

A Louis XV style gilt bronze-mounted marquetry salon table by Mercier Frères. French, circa 1900. This fine petite salon table has a shaped gilt-bronze banded top inlaid with radiating parquetry above a frieze drawer centred by a foliate gilt-bronze mount. The table is raised on slender cabriole legs headed by foliate clasps and united by a shaped undertier. The legs terminating in scrolled foliate clasps. With an Ivorine plaque to the underside for 'AMEUBLEMENTS DE STYLE Mercier Frères 100 Faubourg St Antoine Paris'. Claude Mercier was born near Dijon in 1803 and established in Paris in 1828, with premises at 15 rue Beautrellis. The firm moved to new premises in 1867 at 100 rue du Faubourg-Saint-Antoine changing its name to become Mercier Frères. Mercier Frères made furniture for the Spanish court in 1855 and participated in many of the major 19th century exhibition, including the Exposition des produits de l'industrie française in 1844 and 1849 and received medals at London in 1852 and in Paris in 1855. François Linke is known to have produced items of furniture for Mercier Frères. In the Twentieth Century, the brothers incorporated the contemporary Art Deco style alongside their traditional furniture, exhibiting an office in the 1924 Salon des Artistes Décorateurs. They also exhibited in the two 1929 Salons and became particularly well known for their traditional use of wood. In the 1925 exhibition at the Esplanade des Invalides, Stand 48, they exhibited with firms such as Sormani. In the 1920's a new gallery was opened at the Palais de Marbre at 77 Champs-Elysées. Louis XV Style Marquetry Occasional Table, By Beurdeley
By Maison Beurdeley
Located in Brighton, West Sussex
A Fine and Rare Louis XV Style Gilt-Bronze Mounted Marquetry Occasional Table. By Emmanuel Alfred (dit Alfred II) Beurdeley. Paris. France, Circa 1885. The top with marquetry of precious fruitwoods and rare timbers depicting a central cartouche of two monkeys standing in a classical landscape, dressed as men playing a drum and a tambourine. The surrounding marquetry composed of rocaille framed trellis parquetry panels with musical attributes. The shaped top surrounded by a three-quarter gilt-bronze gallery. The top slides back and the drawer opens to reveal a writing tray. The serpentine sides with cartouches with flower-filled marquetry. On cabriole legs headed by gilt-bronze rocaille clasps. Beautifully rendered by Beurdeley this ‘table Singeries’ is ennobled with the fullest frivolity of the rococo. The marquetry scene on the top derives from engravings published in Paris in the mid-eighteenth century entitled ‘Le Tambour de Basque’ and 'Le Tambourin’ by J. Guelard after designs by Christophe Huet (died 1759) from a series entitled ‘Singeries ou Différentes Actions de la Vie Humaine Representées par des Singes’. The present writing table is almost identical to an 18th century table in the James A. de Rothschild collection at Waddesdon Manor (inv. 3472) which was purchased by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild at the legendary auction of Prince Demidov’s Florentine Palazzo San Donato in 1880 (Lot 1554 — Très jolie table...
