About the Item

A Palatial very fine and rare pair of French 19th century Louis XV style Ormolu and Malachite Pedestal side tables, attributed to Frédéric-Eugène Piat (French, 1827-1903), the bronze casting by Georges Édouard Gagneau (1842-1909) Gagneau Frères. The ornate triform gilt-bronze base with a floral, acanthus, wreath and seashell design, raised on scrolled feet, the interior center surmounted with twin acorn finials, and fitted with a later circular malachite veneer top above an icicle designed gilt-bronze apron. Stamped "G.A" several times on the ormolu underside. Circa: Paris, 1870. Eugène Piat collaborated in the 1870s with a very large number of manufacturers, and varied his achievements according to the specialties of each house: From 1866, the artist joined forces with bronze maker Georges Édouard Gagneau (1842-1909), specializing in lighting devices. The latter ensures by contract the exclusivity of the ornamentalist for works devoted to lighting, the bronzes of art at Charles de Marnyhac (1838-1897) and Émile Colin (1844-1898), fireplace fittings at Charles Augustin Morisot (1842-?), Small furnishing bronzes at Henri Perrot (1824-1911), or even art zincs at Jules Ranvier (1833-1901 ). The immense variety and diversity of models created by Eugène Piat at the end of the 1870's is particularly evident at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1878 where the artist is omnipresent in the entire section devoted to bronze art. Among these models made by the ornamentalist, the Lemerle-Charpentier house presents a large Louis XVI style clock, inspired by Jean Charles Delafosse, in gilded bronze and green bronze. Piat obtains a gold medal for all of its collaborations. The artist also acquired an official place in the bronze industry at this exhibition by becoming a member of the jury for the first time. Eugène Piat’s success was confirmed at the 1889 World's Fair. Once again, the artist presented numerous models and was appointed a member of the jury. But it was above all at the end of this exhibition that he received the praise of the entire profession which awarded him the Grand Prix, the highest award ever granted to an industrial artist. Following this exhibition, Eugène Piat chooses to take a retirement which will ultimately only be temporary. Georges François Edouard Gagneau was a bronzier and 'Fabricant de Bronzes' - Born 21 April 1842 and died in Paris in 1909. Gagneau established the 'Gagneau Frers. firm in the 19th century and became famous for his manufacture of fine lighting pieces as well as manufacturing bronze and ornamental objets d'art for many Parisian designers of the time, including the renown French sculptor and ornamentalist, Frédéric-Eugène Piat (French, 1827-1903). Gagneau participated in many exhibitions throughout his career and received numerous awards for his works. He became part of the jury at the 1889 Paris Universal Exhibition (Exposition universelle) in the category of art-bronzes (Class 25). Pair Italian Early 20th Century Rococo-Style Gilt-Bronze Center Tables/Consoles
By Fonderia Chiurazzi
Located in Los Angeles, CA
A Large and Impressive Pair of Italian Early 20th Century Rococo-Style Gilt-Bronze Center Tables or Wall Consoles with Marble Tops, attributed to Luigi Ciampaglia, renowned for his leadership at the esteemed Fonderia (Foundry) Chiurazzi di Napoli (Naples). These tables boast intricately cast serpentine gilt bronze frames featuring an ornate apron adorned with bearded male masks flanked by swaged floral garlands, C-scrolls, and acanthus motifs. They stand on four elegantly curved cabriolet legs joined by an 'X' stretcher, all terminating in floral sabots, supporting luxurious veined green Verde Antico marble tops. Both tables are elegantly engraved with "Ciampaglia" on the apron, suggesting they were likely a special private commission by Luigi Ciampaglia, possibly crafted by either the Fonderia Ciampaglia or the Fonderia Chiurazzi. Circa: Naples, 1920-1940. Note: Another example of this model is currently on display at The Miramar Mansion in Newport, R.I Luigi Ciampaglia held the position of head artisan at the Fonderia (Foundry) Chiurazzi di Napoli. Established by Gennaro Chiurazzi (1840–1906), the Fonderia Chiurazzi originated from a modest foundry founded in Naples in 1870. It swiftly gained renown, expanding into a workshop within the Albergo dei Poveri, where a team of skilled craftsmen, known as formatori, diligently produced casts of numerous statues. Over time, the foundry secured the privilege of taking molds from prestigious collections, including those of the Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Naples, the Capitoline Museums, the Vatican, the Borghese Gallery in Rome, and the Palazzo Pitti and the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. This resulted in the creation of over fifteen hundred plaster piece molds, embodying the century-long legacy of the company—a feat that remains unparalleled today. Chiurazzi bronzes...

A French Louis XV style Mahogany & Ormolu Mounted Side Table Attr Francois Linke
By François Linke
Located in Los Angeles, CA
A fine French Louis XV Style Mahogany and Gilt-Bronze (Ormolu) Mounted Side Table, Attributed to Franc¸ois Linke (1855-1946). The square shaped table fitted with a Bre^che Violette marble top with a gilt bronze trim, the body surmounted on each corner with bronze caryatid mounts of winged female busts and an acanthus apron, the lower shelf with a sunburst parquetry design and raised on four cabriolet legs ending with gilt bronze sabots. The mounts stamped 'E.M' on the reverse. We believe that this table was most likely commissioned to Linke by Mâison Millet. circa: Paris, 1900-1920. François Linke (1855-1946) was one of the most celebrated ébénistes of his time. Born in Pankraz, Bohemia, Linke moved to Paris in 1875 and six years later established independent ateliers at 170, rue de Faubourg St. Antoine. As was the practice among contemporaries and noteworthy predecessors, such as Alfred Beurdeley and Henry Dasson, Linke initially produced furniture derived from styles popular during the 18th century ancien régime. By 1900, his worldwide reputation as an individualistic master of high quality furniture was already established. However, with a huge display, placing his extravagant pieces in room settings and winning the Médaille d'Or for his Grand Bureau...
