About the Item

This is a very old low table made in Japan. Its design is simple—consisting of a single slab of wood placed atop a tree stump. The materials used for both the top and base date back to the Meiji period (1860s–1920s). The tabletop is made from chestnut wood, while the stump is crafted from keyaki (zelkova). Both materials are exceptionally strong, full of character, and increasingly rare. The natural texture of the chestnut top and the powerful presence of the keyaki stump are in perfect harmony, giving the piece a bold and dynamic impression. This table is highly versatile—it can serve as a sofa table, side table, or accent piece and it integrates effortlessly into any interior setting. From this table, one can feel the essence of wabi-sabi the Japanese aesthetic that finds beauty in imperfection and the transience of all things. It stands in contrast to vulgarity; it is understated, modest, and unconventionally beautiful. This is a one-of-a-kind piece—exceptionally rare and impossible to replicate. Since ancient times, people in Japan have crafted the tools necessary for daily life using familiar, local materials to survive and live in harmony with nature. Through continued use, these tools develop a rich patina and come to reflect the lives of those who used them. In today’s world, where mass production and disposability are the norm, the act of continually restoring and reinventing the things around us opens the door to new values and ways of living. Guided by this philosophy, we carefully select and present beautiful, powerful, and truly one-of-a-kind antiques from across Japan.
