We are delighted to offer for sale this stunning and very rare 19th century Grand Tour tilt top table hand painted with a scene of the Pon Du Gard Aqueduct in the south of France This table is pure art furniture, it is sublime from every angle, its based on a normal Victorian tilt top tripod table, the frame is ebonized, hand painted, the top is paper mâché, again hand painted with lots of mother or pearl inlay The scene depicts what looks like workers or fisherman, these seem to be Chinese so perhaps visiting France! An extraordinary fine English victorian marquetry Sycamore, Amboyna, burr-walnut and ormolu-mounted circular tulipwood crossbanding tip-top center table with inlaid decorations depicting wicker baskets full of flowers, vines, butterflies and hummingbirds, in the manner and attributed to Edward Holmes Baldock (1777-1845) after a design by Richard Bridgens, circa London, 1840. Measures: Height: 29 1/4 inches (74.3 cm). Diameter: 53 1/2 inches (135.9 cm). Edward Holmes Baldock (1777-1845) is listed in London Trade Directories of the period in various capacities. He first appears listed at 7 Hanway Street, London in 1805 described as a 'dealer in China and glass' and by 1821 as ' an antique furniture and ornamental furniture dealer'. By 1826 the various facets of the business included 'buying and selling, exchanging and valuing China, cabinets, screens, bronzes etc' Baldock's business seems to have largely involved trading in foreign items and from 1832-1837 he was the purveyor of earthenware and glass to William IV and later purveyor of china to Queen Victoria from 1838 until his death. He is known to have repaired, re-modelled and adapted furniture...

An English George II period mahogany tripod table from the mid-18th century, with pie-crust tilt-top, turned baluster stem and carved cabriole legs. Born during the third quarter of the 18th century, this English mahogany table features a circular tilt-top with pie-crust edge, resting on a bird-cage mechanism. Tripod tables were often used as tea tables, the tilt-tops allowing them to be folded and stored away easily. Our table is raised on a lovely baluster stem, adorned with a spirally turned motif. Creating a perfect conclusion to this elegant ensemble, the table rests on three Rococo cabriole legs, accented with acanthus leaves surrounding a central medallion on the knees, and ending in ball-and-claw feet. In preparing for your next holiday party or dinner party, an antique or vintage dessert table might just be the perfect finishing touch.

Dessert tables are elegant pieces essential for hosting both formal and casual gatherings. Also known as tilt-top tables or loo tables (named for the card game), these eye-catching furnishings make it easy to host large parties so that guests are not confined to a single space for the night. The top of a tilt-top table is typically hinged to a pedestal in the structure’s center so that its surface can be turned from a horizontal to a vertical position and parked in the corner of a living room or dining room. This gives it an advantage over a traditional side table and allows it to take up less space when it’s not in use.

Dessert tables are deliberately built small or narrow so that they are easy to maneuver. These compact tables were especially prominent in the 18th century in the United States and England where they regularly accompanied social interactions like tea drinking. During the early 1920s, the sterling-silver full tea service and tray designed by Tiffany & Co. set atop your dessert table might include a hot-water kettle on a stand, a coffeepot, a teapot, a creamer with a small lip spout, a waste bowl and a bowl for sugar, which the British were stirring into tea by the 1720s and ’30s.

Older dessert tables often feature intricate carvings and motifs, making them enduringly popular through the decades. Many tilt-top tables likewise have elaborate veneers for a decoration that can be viewed when they are tilted down and stored against a wall.
