About the Item
For sale is an original Estate-Stamped, museum-quality Magnum photographic print by renowned German photographer Herbert List (1903 – 1975).
Titled 'Trepanation (skull operation). Vienna, Austria. 1944', the print is a time-limited Open Edition that was only available to purchase for a period of five days.
The photograph, which reflects List's fascination with Surrealism and the Bauhaus movement, is stamped by the artist's estate (verso) on an affixed archival label that carries the image’s accompanying text. It is mounted and presented in an elegant dark grey oak-wood veneered aluminium frame.
The accompanying text reads:
“It is difficult to draw a horse. But a hoof, or an ear, that does work. Only divine art can capture the whole construct. The mortal can get lost in the details of the Panoptikum. ‘The parts in your hand you may hold and class, but the spiritual link is lost, alas…’”
— Herbert List from the typescript Das Panoptikum, 1945
About this work:
Herbert List was fascinated by the ”artificial humans“—life-size figures moulded in wax—on display at the Panoptikum in Vienna’s Prater. In 1944, he photographed these waxworks, depicting them as “corpses set in position and daubed with make-up—frozen in poses of the utmost intensity, they are inhabitants of a Sleeping Beauty castle.”
About the Artist:
Herbert List (German, 1903–1975) first pursued photography as a hobby, but his talent led him to become the preeminent photographer of the Fotografia Metafísica style and brought him considerable commercial success. As a student in Heidelberg, List apprenticed for a coffee dealer and began taking photographs while travelling on business. Increasingly enmeshed in the European avant-garde of the 1930s, he began to develop his own style of still life and portrait photography. His fascination with Surrealism and the Bauhaus influenced his aesthetic —as did later encounters with the work of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Italian Neorealist film —and his images have been compared to the paintings of Max Ernst and Giorgio de Chirico. List’s photos of Grecian architecture and landscapes earned him his first solo show in Paris in 1937, and commissions from Life and Harper’s Bazaar soon followed —as did an offer to contribute to the photo agency Magnum.
