19th Century Meerschaum with scene, Birth of Christ in frame A meerschaum depicting the birth of Christ in a black oval frame behind convex glass, dating from the early 19th Century. Meerschaum is known, which is used to make pipes and is found in areas such as Crimea, Bosnia, Greece, Spain, Tanzania but especially in Turkey. Meerschaum is a greasy, soft type of stone. A special property of meerschaum is its light weight. It floats in water for a while before slowly sinking. When completely soaked in water, it cuts like soap. When dry, the processing is comparable to softer woods. Finally, fire ensures that it hardens somewhat and that is precisely what is suitable for pipes to give the object sufficient strength. Meerschaum is well known of the smoking pipes. The height is 16 cm, the width is 14 cm and with the convex glass it is 3,5 cm depth The weight is 174 gram. This item shows some traces of use.
