About the Item

Beautiful romantic example of collecting in the late 19th and early 20th century. Wonderfully dried collection of nine algae or Seaweed specimens framed like a herbarium in lacquered wooden frames. The condition of these specimens is very good, the algae beautifully faded into pinkish red and brown colors. The frames and backing are all in place, I think the 'new' paper tape on the back is a mid-twentieth century restoration. Flower and plant collecting was popular in the Victorian and Edwardian period especially botanical specimens from flowers to seaweed and algae specimens. Sizes: 2 frames of 21.5 cm high and 24.5cm wide (8.5inch : 9.7inch) 2 frames of 21.5cm high and 26.5cm wide (8.5inch : 10.4inch) 17cm high and 11.2cm wide (6.7inch : 4.4inch) 14cm high and 11.2cm wide (5.5inch : 4.4inch) 14.5cm high and 15.2cm wide (5.7inch : 6inch) 16cm high and 15cm wide (6.3inch : 5.9inch) 17cm high and 14.7cm wide (7inch : 5.8inch) I tried to identify the different algae, but I'm not an algae specialist, so please correct me if I'm wrong: 1) Plocamium cartilagineum 2) Cystclonium purpureum 3) Hypoglossum hypoglossoides 4) Spondlythamnion multifidium 5) Polyneura bonnemaisonii 6) Delesseria & Halurus floculosus 7) Delessaria 8) Nitophyllum punctatum 9) Plocamium cartilagineum Very decorative and collectable curiosity cabinet style this set.

Condition:
Wear consistent with age and use. There is minor fading on the frame. At some places you an see the wood colour shine through. The pictures give a good presentation of it. For me this is a beautiful patina that comes with the age & history of this beautiful collection.
