About the Item

Portsmouth, New Hampsire needlework sampler attributed to Hannah Sheafe Pearse (1803-1825) in period gilt frame. Daughter of Captain Samuel Pearse(1759-1816) married Sarah Henderson (b. 1777), daughter of Hugh Henderson and Hannah Sheafe. Together they had five children: Capt. Hugh Henderson Pearse (b. Feb. 5, 1800, d. Aug. 27, 1833), Mary Pearse (b. Jul. 26, 1800, d. Oct. 26, 1818), Hannah Pearse (b. Sept. 27, 1803, m. Dec. 27, 1825 to Joshua B. Whidden), Ann Treadwell Pearse (b. Nov. 20, 1805, d. Apr. 20, 1899, unm.), and Sarah Henderson Pearse (b. May 3, 1808, m. John J. White). Similar sampler by Hannah’s sister Mary sold at Devin Moisan Auctioneers, Inc.
