About the Item
This is a very old Japanese matte paper.
It was made during the Meiji period (1860s-1920s) and is very large, measuring approximately 1900 mm x 1420 mm.
The Japanese paper is carefully pasted together, and the surface is coated with persimmon tannin to make it waterproof and moisture-proof. Inscribed in black ink in the center of the paper is the inscription, “放八畳六枚之内三畳ノ方分一” suggesting that it was used under tatami mats for moisture-proofing purposes.
Over the years, the natural texture, countless cracks, and traces of brushstrokes have been combined to create a beautiful expression that resembles an abstract painting.
A piece this large and in such an unfolded condition is extremely rare and precious.
There are very few tears and it is in excellent condition considering its age.
It will be delivered rolled up for shipping.
This is a very special piece that quietly embraces the spirit of Wabi-Sabi.

Our Philosophy
Objects always tell the truth.
All I can do is just to face with them sincerely and give
them deep affection as much as I can.
There is no boundary of nationalities and of eras in beauty.
But I think now is the time we choose 'Japanese style' and it
will be the best way to remind us of what we are losing
today and to question us about an essence of beauty again.
I hope that you can touch the memories which the objects here have,
feel and think of something invisible but exists undoubtedly.
