Monumental Orientalist Art Nouveau Wall Panel with Repoussé Copper Appliqué, c.

About the Item

Monumental Orientalist Art Nouveau Wall Panel with Repoussé Copper Appliqué, c. 1900 An extraordinary, large-scale Orientalist wall panel, produced in Europe around 1900, blending the romanticized imagery of the Orient with the decorative elegance of the Art Nouveau era. This one-of-a-kind mixed-media piece combines painted or dyed textile, repoussé copper appliqué, and colored glass elements to striking effect. The scene depicts a noble rider, mounted not on a horse—but on a donkey, a more regionally accurate choice in North African and Saharan settings. The rider, dressed in richly embellished attire and an elaborate, fantastical headdress, is accompanied by a standing groom and a cloaked, seated figure—possibly a spiritual guide or wise man—positioned among stylized palm trees. The entire landscape suggests a mythologized oasis, rather than a realistic location, in keeping with the European Orientalist tradition. The panel's surface is richly adorned with hand-hammered copper details, especially in the figures’ clothing and the wide decorative floral border. Many copper flower plaques originally held glass inlays, though some are now missing, revealing the white underlayer—a form of historical wear that adds to the artwork’s antique authenticity. Construction Details: A visible vertical seam runs down the center of the textile, not as damage, but as part of the original production process. At the time, textiles of this monumental width were unavailable in single pieces. Large wall panels like this were often assembled from multiple narrower cloth sections, then painted and embellished by hand. Context and Purpose: The sheer size, complexity, and material richness of this piece strongly suggest it was not a personal art project, but rather the work of a decorative arts workshop or studio, possibly involving multiple artisans: textile painters, metalworkers, and assemblers. It is likely this panel was commissioned for: A colonial-era public space (e.g., hotel, governmental salon, or exposition) A wealthy private collector or patron fascinated by Orientalist themes Or created on speculation by a decorative arts workshop to exhibit their skill at a fair or trade event This is not mass-produced work, nor does it appear to be a purely decorative textile. Rather, it is an artistic showcase of craftsmanship, aligning with late 19th-century European interest in handwork, exoticism, and monumental wall decoration. Condition: Structurally sound. Some glass cabochons missing from the border, exposing the white gesso layer beneath. Natural patina on copper elements. Minor seam opening at center. All decorative components securely attached. Summary Highlights: Monumental scale (over 109 inches - 2.7 meters wide) Repoussé copper on painted textile Unique subject: donkey-riding nobleman with entourage Missing glass adds age authenticity Produced by a decorative workshop, not a single artist Intended for high-end interior, exposition, or institutional setting Rare fusion of Orientalist fantasy and Art Nouveau design Exposition wall art 1900s decorative studio piece Large-scale Orientalist panel European fantasy Orient Collaborative workshop art Hand-painted textile wall hanging Antique exhibition decor Colonial-era European art
