About the Item

Victorian copper cake mold, made by W M Still & Co in London, dated 1903 and marked with the British Broad Arrow no. 53. This symbol indicates that the item is government property. The Office of Ordnance, established in 1544 and later becoming the Board of Ordnance in 1597, was responsible for supplying guns, ammunition, and equipment to the Royal Navy. This responsibility was transferred to the War Office in 1857. Used as a royal symbol since 1661, the Broad Arrow was applied to all metal objects supplied or issued by the War Office under the Public Store Act of 1875.
