About the Item
Yoshikatsu Tamekane "Bird" Abstract Woodcut
This is a stunning abstract woodblock with collagraph by Japanese printmaker Yoshikatsu Tamekane (b. 1959). Tamekane is best known for adding rich, textural effects to his woodblock prints. Through a technique called collograph, different materials are collaged onto the raised surface of the block. This raised surface can then be inked and printed as a relief block. This stunning piece, depicting a soaring bird on a blue sky overlaid in gold leaf, is a perfect example of his work. "Bird" is numbered lower left as edition 33/40. It is titled lower left in both Japanese and English, and pencil-signed and dated (1997) lower right. This piece is displayed in a modern black wooden frame.
Yoshikatsu Tamekane (b. 1959) was born in the Osaka area and graduated from the Sokei Academy of Fine Arts in Tokyo. He studied in Paris for three years, and in Philadelphia for one, which gives him more of an international approach than many other Japanese artists. Tamekane's woodblock prints employ bright and clear color, and the imagery is pleasing to the eye. His treatment of the paper he uses commands the viewer’s attention, sometimes he prints the color from the back of the paper; he also works in handmade Japanese washi paper. Tamekane produces very small limited editions of his work, which drives demand.
The themes of Tamekane's work explore both time and space. He says he savors the past and also looks forward to the future as a time of hope and advancement for the human spirit. Tamekane uses composition, texture, color, and dimensionality to draw the viewer in and create a vision of haunting beauty.
