About the Item
Famous for his attenuated, highly stylized horses, hounds and other animals, often executed in iron or ceramic, William Hunt Diederich was one of the masters of Art Deco imagery in America. This pair of drawings shows his take on the myth of Leda and the Swan, executed in crayon, and showing his usual flair for flamboyant abstraction.

By William Littlefield
Located in Philadelphia, PA
A fine and bold drawing by William Littlefield, this piece depicts male and female nude figures in an embrace, the male figure inspired by Nicholas Podiapolski, Littlefield's model and lover in the late 1920s. Littlefield is known for his male nudes and mythological scenes, either in ink wash as here, or in oil on canvas. This drawing was completed in St. Tropez, during an extended stay in Europe that gave him a close acquaintance with Italian and other classical art. Two years later, Littlefield formed a friendship with Lincoln Kirstein...

This remarkable and stunning set of six sensuous prints, highlighted in gold and silver ink, was published and bound by John Henry Nash in 1926 to honor the life of his frequent collaborator, Ray Frederick Coyle. Coyle had died an early death, prompting Nash to issue this volume in a limited edition of 210 (this example is number 54), dedicating it to Albert Maurice Bender and William Randolph Keltie Young. Nash had established his own press 10 years before, and was dubbed by one admirer "The Aldus of San Francisco." Coyle illustrated several books published by Nash, including "Jurgen: A Comedy of Justice" and "The Sermon on the Mount...

Born near Glasgow in Scotland, Walter Shirlaw settled with his family in New York in 1841, when he was two or three years old. As a young boy, he took night classes at the National Academy of Design, and first exhibited his work there in 1861. The first years of his career were spent as an engraver at the American Bank-Note Company, while at the same time attempting to establish himself as a painter.
He later moved to Chicago, where he continued to work as an banknote engraver and also taught art at the Chicago Academy of Design. In 1870, at the relatively late age of thirty-two, Shirlaw travelled to Europe to study. Prevented from settling in Paris by the Franco-Prussian War, he instead studied in Munich, where he joined the small group of American painters working in the city, including Frank Duveneck and William Merrit Chase...
