About the Item
Born in Austria and a student of art in Eastern Europe, Gross emigrated to America in 1921. He began studying under Elie Nadelman and was befriended by Isaac, Raphael and Moses Soyer. He soon adopted the human figure as his preferred subject matter, first carving his sculptures in wood, then working in bronze, watercolor and other media. For many years, he focused on depicting the family unit, most often mother and child, often cavorting or playing, but always loving and affectionate. This drawing, in ink and watercolor, is especially playful and light.
