An original portrait drawing by Sir Stanley Spencer of Daphne Spencer, his niece
About the Item
An original portrait drawing by Sir Stanley Spencer of Daphne Spencer, his niece (and reputedly his lover), finely drawn with the sitter looking slightly to the right, pencil on cartridge paper, glazed and framed. Together with the Exhibition catalogue. English, circa 1950.
Exhibited: Sir Stanley Spencer Selling Exhibition, Cookham Arts Festival, May 1967. No. 6006.
Provenance: Sir Stanley Spencer Memorial Gallery, Cookham
Donald Radermacher (MD of Peter Jones Department Store, Sloane Square, London)
Bequeathed to his nephew, Rae Amis Duxbury and thence by descent
Footnote: The sitter has been identified as Daphne Spencer, daughter of Stanley’s brother, Harold. Stanley almost certainly had a liaison with Daphne, which naturally caused a bit of a stir in Cookham where he lived for a time. Donald Radermacher also lived in Cookham and knew Sir Stanley. We have good reason to believe that he purchased this drawing at the above exhibition.
Sir Stanley Spencer, CBE RA (30 June 1891 – 14 December 1959) was an English painter who studied as the Slade School of Art in London. His most famous works include large scale paintings for the Sandham Memorial Chapel and the Shipbuilding on the Clyde series. Although a fervent Christian, with many religious commissions, Spencer provoked great shock and controversy and, in 1950, was charged with obscenity over nude depictions of both his wives, Hilda Carline and Patricia Preece. Alongside his complicated domestic life, he conducted numerous affairs, including, apparently, with Daphne. He painted portraits of her when he visited his elder brother Harold in Northern Ireland in 1951, 1952 and 1953.
The Amis family were model makers and had a work shop/gallery in Piccadilly. Richard Amis bequeathed his fine art collection to Eton College. Subject of a recent exhibition – ‘An Etonian Collector The Richard Amis Bequest’ – it featured the work of significant artists including J.M.W. Turner (1775–1851), J.R. Cozens (1752–1797), David Cox Snr (1783–1859) and Peter de Wint (1784–1849). Amis gave the works with the intention that they would be ‘kept together and well looked after, and perhaps spark an interest in some… as my [Eton] tutor and his watercolours did for me.’

A bronze portrait of Sir Winston Churchill by Rufus Martin, 2023
Located in Lymington, Hampshire
A bronze portrait of Sir Winston Churchill by Rufus Martin, 2023 This head and shoulders bronze bust is instantly recognizable as Sir Winston Churchill. He is wearing a British Warm greatcoat with epaulettes and has a half-smoked cigar in the left hand resting on his hip. His right hand is raised in his trade mark V-for-Victory salute. Signed ‘Rufus Martin 1/12’.
Sir Winston Churchill (1874 –1965) was a British politician, army officer and writer. He was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945, when he led Britain to victory in the Second World War, and again from 1951 to 1955. Churchill represented five constituencies during his career as a Member of Parliament. Ideologically an economic liberal and imperialist, for most of his career he was a member of the Conservative Party, which he led from 1940 to 1955, but from 1904 to 1924 was a member of the Liberal Party. This portrait of Churchill by Rufus Martin is striking for its juxtaposition of this famous historical subject and the free and contemporary choice of presentation. Churchill’s tenure during the Second World War infused the nation with calm and confidence, providing the British people with strong leadership during its darkest hours. Martin succeeds in portraying Churchill’s unshakeable belief in a successful outcome for the Allies through his defiant stance, unwavering gaze and Victory V gesture. Together with the recognizable “Bulldog” facial features and broad shoulders, this bust captures the subject in terms of character as well as being an accurate physical portrait .
Rufus Martin trained at Wimbledon College of the Arts, London, though his aptitude for 3D design and sculpture was apparent from a very young age. His mother, a portrait painter, showed him the portrait sculptures of Augusta Savage, Jacob Epstein and Augustine Rodin, which inspired him to create a bust of his late mentor, Michael Howells. He sculpts ‘intriguing individuals, always hoping to capture some element of their past or current struggles and to create something for the good of the community they inhabit and wherever possible for posterity’ – an ambition he has most successfully fulfilled with this powerful portrait.
After leaving college in 2017, with first class honours, Martin has won many prestigious prizes including the Tiranti Prize at the FACE, the Signature Art Award, the Chelsea Arts Club show for ‘Amy’, the True Blue Show, the Salmagundi Open Show, New York, Green & Stone Summer Show, the Chelsea Arts Society Summer Show, RBA Rising Stars, the Royal Cambrian Academy Open, the
Binny Mathews & Sons joint show, The Next Big Thing and has been published in the Kings House...

Major R Sloane-Stanley by George Hillyard Swinstead, 1916
Located in Lymington, Hampshire
This three-quarter length oil on canvas portrait shows Major Sloane-Stanley in a landscape by the sea. He is smoking a cigar and wearing a Royal Yacht Squadron cap. Signed lower left ‘G Hillyard Swinstead 1916’ the reverse inscribed in pencil ‘Major R Sloane-Stanley, Hants Yeomanry 1916’ . English.
Capt. thence Lt Col Ronald F A Sloane-Stanley of the Hampshire Regiment (1867 – 1948) served as Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire. As a close friend of Edward VII, he reputedly procured two billiard tables from Osborne House (East Cowes, Isle of Wight) for Lee- on-the-Solent Yacht Club, of which he was the founding Commodore in 1907. He was also a member of the Royal Yacht Squadron from 1907 until his death, owning seven yachts during that period. He served on the Yachting Committee between 1935 and 1946.
Despite Sloane-Stanley's long history of involvement with yachting, there is one yacht with which his family is associated that overshadows all of his other great achievements in the sport. The Formosa, built for his father Francis Sloane-Stanley in 1877, was acclaimed as a masterpiece of maritime design before she was even launched. In a rhapsodic article published on the 22nd of February 1879, The Field newspaper describes her as “the most beautiful cutter yacht ever built”.
In addition to her fine attributes as a racing vessel, the article also mentions the luxurious way that she was decorated inside, personally supervised and designed by Mrs Sloane-Stanley-our sitter's mother.
The Formosa, pictured above, became so famous that shortly after this article was written Francis Sloane-Stanley sold her to his friend the Prince of Wales (later Edward VII). There are several images of the Formosa in the Royal Collection, all dating from 1880. The Prince raced her on multiple occasions and her victories included the Queen's Cup on the 3rd of August 1880. By 1881, however, the Prince had sold her to a “Mr Bischoffsheim” as reported in the as reported in the Portsmouth Evening News on the 23rd of July of that year.
Although Ronald Sloane-Stanley would have been 12 at the time the Formosa was raced by his father it is highly likely that seeing this beautiful cutter, and the success that it brought to his family, would have inspired Ronald's own yachting career.
Additionally, as the same article in The Field makes clear, the Sloane-Stanley family were related in some way to Thomas Assheton-Smith, a founder member of the Yacht Club (later the Royal Yacht Squadron). The family is therefore a highly renowned one in yachting circles and we were lucky enough to be able to offer a silver gilt trophy won by Assheton Smith at the Regatta in 1828 in one of our previous catalogues. This portrait is a very exciting piece of yachting memorabilia as well as a superb work of art in its own right.
