Attr. Scipione Pulzone (Gaeta, c. 1540 - Rome, 1598) Madonna with the Child, San Giovannino and Sant'Anna Oil on canvas, 118 x 100 cm Frame 131 x 114 cm The work in question depicts an intimate scene with the Madonna, San Giovannino and Sant'Anna, who observe the Child adoringly, holding a small red carnation in his hands, an allusion to the Passion. The fixity of Mary, with her hands stretched out and folded in prayer, contrasts with the luminous presence of the Child, who, turning his gaze to the observer, contributes to giving dynamism to the devotional image, as well as his sprawling pose on his mother's legs. it is an indication of a marked adherence to truth that was going to be sought in painting. The work, due to the attention to detail and the study of the light that highlights the figures in the foreground, underlining the modesty of the Madonna and the simple humanity of Sant'Anna, portrayed with her face marked by time, can be approached to the hand of Scipione Pulzone. Born between 1540 and 1542, Scipione Pulzone was probably initiated into painting by his father; his first literary and artistic training took place in Gaeta, his hometown, also affected by the orientations of the Neapolitan artistic culture. Around 1562 he was in Rome and in 1567 he was registered at the Accademia di San Luca. In 1572 he was called to Naples for the first time, at the invitation of don Juan de Austria, natural son of King Philip II of Habsburg and commander in chief of the Christian fleet in Lepanto; the following year, again in Rome, he was welcomed into the circle of the Colonna, introduced by Marcantonio II, already his client, on his return from the victory over the Turks at Lepanto. He paints portraits and paintings of sacred subjects for the most influential families of the city and in the 1980s he began the series of public commissions. In 1584 he was in Florence, active as a portraitist with the grand-ducal family, and later again in Naples; in 1587 for San Domenico a Gaeta he painted the Annunciation, currently preserved in Capodimonte, a work that embodies the stylistic dictates of Pulzone's painting, such as the faces with marked features, with large eyes marked by thin lines to outline the eyebrows and the contour of the lips. The works of Pulzone's artistic maturity are represented by a series of paintings of religious subjects (Holy Family Borghese, Madonna della Divina Provvidenza in the Convent of San Carlo ai Catinari), and by paintings that testify to his inexhaustible, perfected, portraiture vein, visible in the Madonna in the Borghese collection and in the Madonna with Child, San Giovannino and Santa Elisabetta recently appeared on the market, in which the face of the Saint emphasizes that of Anna, in the expression lines that mark the features with unexpected realism. In our painting the reference to fifteenth-century pictorial models is also evident, consistent with the counter-reformed spirituality that required sacred images with a clear content and immediate impact.

Virginal fabrics become mottled at the folds, wrapping the Madonna in a thin vitreous mantle. The pastel colors, shining on the pink robe just tightened at the waist by a gold cord, enliven the faces of the divine couple in correspondence of the cheeks, lit by an orange warmth. Even the left hand of the Virgin, composed in perfect classical pose (Botticelli, Madonna with Child, 1467, Musée du Petit Palais, Avignon), is sprinkled with warmth thanks to the immediate touch with Christ. From the nimbus of the Mother a delicate luminous disk is effused, which takes back, in the most distant rays, the colour of the hair of the Son, from the tones of the sun. The Child Jesus is represented intent in a tender gesture of invitation with the right hand, while with the other he offers a universal blessing: with his hand he retracts the index and annular palms, extending the remaining three fingers, symbol of Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The painting welcomes and re-elaborates that typically Tuscan formalism that boasted in the rest of Italy the constant appreciation by the most up-to-date artists and collectors. Arrangement, composition and mixing of colors place the canvas in the middle between the changing mannerist and the sculptural figures of Michelangelo, essential yardstick of comparison in terms of anatomical and expressionistic rendering. In the present, silvery and pinkish powders act as three-dimensional inducers to the Child’s mentioned musculature and to the vivid folds of the clothes, expertly deposited on the lunar whiteness of the skins.
