About the Item

Antique 17th-century Italian painting. Oil on canvas artwork with an intense depiction of Saint Francis of Assisi in ecstasy. The saint is depicted in prayer, kneeling, gazing heavenward with outstretched arms as he receives the miracle of the stigmata. At his feet are typical iconographic symbols, an open book and a skull, reminiscent of the work of painters associated with the Tenebrism movement. The strong Caravaggesque influence, with sharp contrasts of light and shadow and a warm, dramatic palette, brings this canvas closer to Neapolitan painting of the second half of the 17th century. Artwork of great expressive power, capable of creating an atmosphere of intense devotion even in a contemporary living context. The painting has already been restored with relining, replacement of the stretcher, and repainting in small areas. It has some paint drops at the bottom (see photo), but is in overall fair condition.

Once upon a time there was a farmer who fraudulently administered his master's assets. Before being fired, he tries to recover part of the credits by making important discounts to creditors, who will be grateful to him. The master, instead of condemning this behavior which is detrimental to him, praises the cunning of the farmer. This story is meant to urge believers to do whatever is necessary before the imminent arrival of the Kingdom of God and its judgment.
