About the Item

This refined mid-19th-century oil on canvas is the work of French painter and illustrator Amédée Greux (1836–1879), an accomplished artist known for his richly detailed compositions and delicate touch. A frequent exhibitor at the Paris Salon, Greux was celebrated both for his romantic genre scenes and his exceptional draftsmanship as an anatomical illustrator. Listed in the Benezit (see last picture). Here, he presents a graceful interior tableau: a young lady in flowing pink silk stands before a large window, gazing out to sea, while a gentleman in powdered wig gestures animatedly beside her. The Rococo furnishings, heavy drapery, and soft natural light are rendered with remarkable precision, capturing the elegance and emotion of a bygone era. Measuring 24.75 inches wide by 28 inches high including its frame, the painting is set within an elaborate 19th-century giltwood frame, richly carved with beading, leaf motifs, and a deep profile that enhances its dramatic presence. The canvas remains in excellent antique condition, with light craquelure and a warm, aged surface consistent with its period. Signed lower left A. Greux, this piece is a fine example of romantic French academic painting, both decorative and historically resonant, ideal for a formal living space, study, or gallery wall.
