Acrylic on Canvas, The Eid ul-Adha

About the Item

This acrylic painting by Ali Hassoun celebrates the festival the Eid ul-Adha. One of the most important Islamic festivals, commemorating the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son Ishmael as an act of obedience to God's command. This painting portraying the sacrifice of a bull. Ali Hassoun was born in Saida, Lebanon in 1964. In 1982 he moved to Florence, Italy graduating from the cities university with a degree in Architecture. He then went on to study at the Accademia di Belli Arti. The most easily identifiable theme in his more recent paintings is the clash of cultures, East/West. Ali wants to highlight the idea of “Humanity” as a universal and spiritual feature that is common to all peoples and cultures. A concept he places before political and religious division. His art often portraying the idea that different traditions and cultures can coexist. This large acrylic painting is from his precious period when he was living and working in Siena, Tuscany. A period of experimentation and discovery. This signed and dated painting demonstrating a freer style than his now distilled approach. The wide loose brush and pallet strokes demonstrating the joy and excitement of the younger artist at the time. Motivated, inspired and prolific Ali was bursting with ideas and images. This period of his life in Siena left many collectors in the region with some fabulous examples of a younger, slightly more political, social and highly driven artist. The painting has been rolled and stored for around twenty years. There is slight cracking in the areas where the acrylic has been applied with a greater depth. There also appears to be some very small areas where white emulsion, possibly from house decoration, has left some white dotting. This could also be from white sizing used by Ali in the same studio? Otherwise the painting is in very good condition.
