This expressive oil painting from 1978 captures the vibrant mediterranean port town of Bastia, located in northern Corsica. At the center of the painting is a dense cluster of pastel-colored buildings nestled on a hillside. The church Saint-Jean-Baptiste, with its two baroque towers, stands prominently in the cityscape. The foreground features a lively harbor with numerous small boats, their reflections shimmering in the colorful water. A single rowboat to the right adds dynamic movement to the scene. The backdrop of lush green mountains gives the composition depth, while the sky in soft blue and white hues contrasts harmoniously with the sunlit architecture. Oil on chipboard. Signed lower left 'AM 78'. The artwork is set in a classic, dark wood frame with gold trim, in good condition with some traces of use.
Alexander Michael (1939-2024) was a German landscape, still life and architectural painter. His paintings can be stylistically assigned to Impressionism or a late Impressionist style. His loose painting style, applied with a sure hand, creates a lively and atmospheric effect with visible brushstrokes and bright colors. The light conditions, color tones and the artist's subjective perception are characteristic of his works.
