About the Item

Augusto Corelli (1853 - 1910) Gouache on paper depicting a view of Mount Vesuvius, signed lower right "Corelli", piece measures 13.5 x 17.5 and 19.5 x 23.5 inches with gold colored sculpted wood frame. Augusto Corelli was born in Italy in 1853. Corelli received his training in Rome at the Accademia di San Luca and in Naples with Achille. From Rome he traveled to Lazio and Abruzzo to find themes and attractive motifs. In 1880 Corelli discovered the small, picturesque village of Anticoli Corrado on a ridge. Corelli was fascinated and delighted both by the place itself and by its residents, and was the first artist to set up a permanent studio there. His preference was for watercolor as a medium in which he excelled and received international awards and recognitions at exhibitions. In 1881 Augusto Corelli joined the "Società degli Acquerellisti" (Society of Watercolor Painters) and became one of its leading members.
