About the Item

An original painting with collage titled "12.05", dated 2004, by the accomplished international artist Matthew Rose, an American expat artist, writer and musician living and working in Paris, France. Known widely for his collage works and wall-to-wall, ceiling-to-floor installations, he graduated from Brown University (1981) with a degree in Semiotics/Linguistics. Influenced by the American artists Ray Johnson, Jasper Johns, Joseph Cornell and a handful of French surrealists, Rose works late hours rending paper and bits of text to remake contemporary life into a specific, yet unbound book, what the artist calls his “theory of everything.” “Most of my work involves collage; I cut and paste in all flavors. But I draw, paint, sculpt, find, assemble and put together words as well. I'm always working, I never close." Matthew Rose is present in numerous private collections throughout the world and in public collections such as the MoMA in NYC, the LACMA in Los Angeles, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boca Raton and the Boulder Colorado Museum amongst others. Published: Coronaville. A graphic novella about the Trump Pandemic. Cornell Museum, Delray Beach, Florida. Curated by Melanie Johanson. Eugene Berman Collage in Original Frame
By Eugene Berman
Located in New York, NY
This haunting image by Eugene Berman was painted on a sheet of paper cut in the shape of a heart, mounted to a paint-speckled ground, encircled with metal shavings, and placed in a frame of the artist’s own devising. Berman wrote the title, Radiograph of a Heart, on the back. It refers to the medical X-rays that doctors had recently come to rely on. Yet Berman’s point seems to be that while a heart can be monitored scientifically, the emotions associated with it lie beyond the power of medical science. Russian by birth, Berman fled St. Petersburg during the Revolution and settled in Paris. Later, as a Jew, he fled the Nazi advance and took refuge in New York and Hollywood. His peace of mind, however, was shattered by the suicide of his wife, actress Una Munson (who played Belle Watling in Gone With the Wind). That distressing event — “Don’t follow me” she admonished in her suicide note...
