About the Item
Erasmus Bernhard van Dulmen Krumpelman (1897–1987) was a Dutch painter known for his impressionistic and later more expressive style. Born in Bad Kreuznach, Germany, he moved with his family to Amsterdam shortly after his birth. He initially attended the Barlaeus Gymnasium and then studied at the Hendrik de Keyserschool, though he was expelled due to absenteeism. He later completed his state exam in drawing at the Rijksnormaalschool in 1914.
Van Dulmen's early career was influenced by political cartoonist Johan Braakensiek, and he gained exposure to artists like George Breitner and Willem Witsen, who helped shape his style. His work in the 1910s was predominantly impressionistic, focusing on urban scenes in Amsterdam and landscapes.
In 1921, after marrying, he moved to Drenthe, where he became associated with the De Ploeg group in Groningen. This led to a shift in his style, which became looser and more colorful. He painted a wide range of subjects, including cityscapes of Groningen and Amsterdam, Drenthe landscapes, circus scenes, and portraits, such as one of Professor Adrianus van Veldhuizen for the University of Groningen.
Van Dulmen co-founded the De Drentse Schilders in 1946 and the Drents Schildersgenootschap in 1954. He won the Culturele Prijs van Drenthe in 1958 and had a retrospective exhibition at the Drents Museum in 1984. He was also known for public art, including murals at the Vredenrustschool in Veendam, which were later relocated.
His work is characterized by a blend of impressionism and expressionism, with a focus on vibrant color and dynamic brushstrokes. His subjects included urban and rural landscapes, the human figure, and dynamic scenes from daily life.
