About the Item
Born in Rome, Emmanuel Romano (1897–1984) was an internationally recognized artist whose works have been exhibited in leading institutions including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Detroit Institute of Arts; the Fogg Museum of Art; the Lyman Allyn Art Museum, New London; the Musée Nationaux de France; and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
This striking mixed media painting, created circa 1957, exemplifies Romano’s mid century modern sensibility. With bold, monumental proportions and refined tonal contrasts, the work resonates with his ability to balance abstraction with the human condition. Image size: 35” H x 17.5” W
Critic John Erskine once observed of Romano:“His ideas come to him in great profusion. They have large and noble quality… His draft is toward the monumental. The proportions, even in small paintings and drawings, are heroic. He stimulates an intellectual emotion and suggests abstract ideas. Most of his subjects are based on the important business of life—with a preference for delicate and noble tones and decisive moods.”
