Four Neapolitan underglaze paintings with frame

About the Item

The four 18th-century Neapolitan posthumously framed under-glass paintings depict biblical scenes from The Book of Jonah, specifically: 1. Jonah vomited by the Whale; 2. Elisha and the two bears; 3. Joshua and the prince of Jehovah's army; 4. Jonah in Nineveh. The underglass paintings, little known today, were highly prized over the centuries, so much so that we find them in prestigious museums around the world, even in the United States. These four specimens probably originated in a cabinet, from which they were later removed for framing. The creation is of 18th-century Neapolitan origin, probably traceable to the workshop of master Luca Giordano.
