About the Item
Harif Guzman
"One of a Kind: White on Black 1, " Mixed Media - Graffiti Art
Known simply as “Haculla,” Guzman’s alter ego is characterized by a rudimentary depiction of human physiognomy. Shown here, against a solid black background, Haculla is an early manifestation of Guzman’s plunge into his personal iconography. From the "One of a Kind" series, this painting examines the assemblage of identity through the use of continuous line.
Harif Guzman was born in Venezuela in 1975. However, after moving with his family to New York at the tender age of five, he has since come to call New York City his home. In his youth, Guzman worked for his father — a printer and typesetter — during which, he would come to obtain an appreciation for mechanical reproduction. With a burgeoning affection for typography, in conjunction with his experience growing up in New York City, Guzman would inspire an iconic style worthy of world class recognition. A constant world traveler, Guzman’s work has been exhibited in most continents across the globe.
Guzman’s work inhabits, and extends, a tradition established in the 1920s Weimar Republic. His work is characterized by extemporized collage and gritty multimedia assemblage reminiscent of Kurt Schwitters, Robert Rauschenburg, and Mike Kelley. Guzman’s work is a discussion on the process of change and transformation. The found materials he employs are not simply the physical components he works with, but also the second-hand imagery and ideas endemic to contemporary urban existence.

Contemporary painter David Donovan Jensen works in many media to create compositions that strive to be both static and beautiful. Drawing inspiration from music, Jensen engages in complex, time-consuming processes to produce intricately layered works that appear tranquil despite the fact that he often employs a power sander in their creation. His paintings have been shown in Southhampton, New York, and at the Interior Design Building and featured at the New York Design Center in Manhattan. Jensen has exhibited at many other galleries in Minneapolis and has worked closely with musicians such as Bon Iver...

Watercolor of Three Ships, 1905, Signed Edward John Russell, (American, 1832-1906) Naval Battle Scene
This 19th-century watercolor painting depicts a dramatic naval scene with three sailing ships engaged in battle. The watercolor is after an engraving by George Coggeshall called the "Battle of the Dolphin with British Ship Hebe and Three Brothers", signed and dated in lower right corner "Ewd. J. Russell 1905." The central ship, identified as "Bon Homme Richard," flies an American flag, while the other vessels appear to be British. The artist's attention to detail is evident in the rigging, sails, and the dynamic movement of the ships on the waves...
