Landscape Painting "Shepherd & Flock" by Pieter Gerardus Van Os circa 1821
Located in Shippensburg, PA
PIETER GERARDUS VAN OS
Dutch, 1776-1839
Shepherd with Flock in a Pastoral Landscape (1821)
Oil on canvas Signed lower left "PG Van Os f 1821"
Item # 204GPP23A
An extensive and brilliantly detailed scene, this fine woodland pastoral landscape highlights the ability of Pieter Gerardus van Os to manipulate light for dramatic and somewhat ecclesiastical effect. There is a certain other-worldly insinuation in the golden light as it pierces the dense cover of the leaves to highlight the shepherd and his flock as the focal point for the painting. Here we find the young boy entirely at peace on the bank surrounded by long golden grasses with his hat and staff tossed aside while watching the action of the small waterfall on the otherwise tranquil stream. His small dog stands beside him while the sheep graze carelessly, each showing total disregard for the two men and their dog hunting in shadows of the woods behind them. Across the bank a pair of unattended billy goats graze on the trees of the deeply shaded forest floor.
There is a harmony and perfect sense of balance in this intricately detailed scene, an effective infusion of the transcendental into a quiet landscape scene. The work is signed lower left in his typical scrawling script "PG [intertwined] Van Os f 1821" and the back of the frame retains an early Christie's label. It is presented in a very fine carved giltwood frame.
PIETER GERARDUS VAN OS
Born in The Hague on October 8th of 1776 into the renowned Van Os family of painters, Pieter would spend his early years studying under his father Jan together with his brother Georgius Johannes Jacobus (Dutch, 1782-1861) in their father's studio. The three men had remarkable careers and would become some of the most influential painters in the Netherlands throughout the first half of the 19th century. Unlike his brother and father, Pieter moved away from still-life paintings and focused his work on rural landscapes of the Dutch countryside. He was self-taught in this pursuit, first as a copyist of the renowned Dutch "Golden Age" painters Karel Dujardin (Dutch, 1626-1678) and Paulus Potter (Dutch, 1625-1654) while also being heavily influenced by the landscape work of Jacob van Ruisdael and the allegorical landscapes of Nicolaes Pieterszoon Berchem. From his studio in Amsterdam, Pieter taught such notable pupils as Wouterus Verschuur...

Vintage Large Balinese Painting on Silk from Ubud Bali
Located in North Hollywood, CA
Mid-20th century Balinese painting on silk fabric, framed.
Vintage large Balinese art painting, from Ubud, Bali acrylic on silk.
Beautiful artwork by the Indonesian artist from Ubud.
Painted in Peliatan, Ubud Bali by W. Kurpelir as signed on the bottom left hand corner.
Balinese Folk Festival ceremonial procession, Ink and acrylic paint on canvas.
Batuan painting evolved in the 1930s after a group of local villagers tested different forms with ink-washed paintings upon black backgrounds. These paintings often reveal Batuan’s cultural life, directly through their elements of line, shape, and tone. Meticulous design, craftsmanship, and strong visual impression are characteristic of the style.
The painting comprise individual shapes which are painted in a precise and systematic manner that does not leave any empty space. The complexity of the paintings is inevitable as each of the strokes, lines, gradations, the characters or the subjects forms a delicate unity that finely balances the figure-filled canvas. Various gradations of colors separate different sections of the painting. The landscape is enticing and endless.

Second Futurism Italian Artist Signed Landscape
By Enzo Benedetto
Located in Roma, IT
A beautiful and important painting by the great artist Enzo Benedetto, an absolute protagonist of the so-called ‘Second Futurism’.
It depicts a seascape captured in its essence of natural energy with the waves of the sea crashing powerfully on the coast, probably a glimpse of his homeland, Calabria.
This artwork, never before on the market, comes from an important private collection and is beautified by an impressive original frame in wood, in almost perfect condition.
Enzo Benedetto (Reggio Calabria 1905 - Rome 1993)
Benedetto, called Record by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, approached the Second Futurism in 1924 after meeting Mino Somenzi and was active as a Futurist until his death, becoming a tenacious continuer of the movement's principles, revisited in 1967 with the Futurism Today manifesto. Benedetto theorised and practised the union of colour with the word and coined the term chrome-paroise to define the synthesis of painting and writing.
In 1926 he promoted the futurist hall for the 4th Calabrian Art Biennial in Reggio Calabria where Depero, Dottori, Tato, Fillia, Pozzo, Benedetto Marinetti and himself, amongst others, exhibited.
In 1927 he participated in the National Futurist Exhibition in Palermo.
He moved permanently to Rome in 1927 and joined the Manifesto in 1931.
In a short time he took part in the ‘great Futurist exhibition’ in Imola, the ‘first exhibition of Calabrian art’ in Rome, the ‘33 Futurists’ exhibition at the Pesaro gallery in Milan, and above all the ‘great Futurist exhibition’ at the ‘international artistic circle’ in Via Margutta in Rome.
Benedetto had begun flying in 1926, as a photo of the time documents. That same year, inspired by the exploits of the aviator of the same name, he had executed the painting De Pinedo.
He adhered to the Manifesto already signed by Balla, Marinetti, Depero, Dottori, Tato, Prampolini and Fillia, which advocated the triumph of a spatiality enhanced by flight in its dynamic effects and freed from the fixity of the horizon.
In World War II he was imprisoned in Africa by British troops until the end of the conflict.
Benedetto continued his Futurist activities in the second half of the 20th century.
From 1939 to 1946 he volunteered for the African campaign and was sent to Libya, after which he was imprisoned for six years in the concentration camps in Alexandria, Ismailia, and in India in Bangalore and Yol in Kashmir.
During this imprisonment he was able to paint and some canvases from this period were brought back to Italy, rolled up as personal luggage,
In January 1943, he painted Yol, a new psychological oil portrait of Francesco Tommaso Marinetti.
In 1946, he returned to Italy and in April 1947 presented his first solo exhibition in Rome.
The exhibition dedicated to the great Italian poet and founder of Futurism was opened by Benedetta Marinetti.

In 1948 he had a personal exhibition in Capri at the gallery, ‘l'oblò’, and in Reggio Calabria in the Hall of the ‘Francesco Cilea’ Municipal Theatre.
In 1949 he took part in the Calabrian Biennial in Reggio Calabria.
In 1950 quanta took part with ceramics in the Selective Exhibition of Artistic Craftsmanship in the Angelicum in Milan, and with paintings in the Historical Review of Futurism in the Palazzo di Re Enzo in Bologna.
He then held an important solo exhibition in Milan, at the ‘Centro d'Arte San Babila’ and participated in the sixth Quadrennial in Rome. He had a solo exhibition in Fano and another exhibition in Rome in the Galleria del Palazzo delle Esposizioni and in the Galleria del Teatro ‘il Millimetro’.
In 1951 he took part in the collective exhibition ‘Mostra Nazionale della Pittura e della Scultura futurista’ (National Exhibition of Futurist Painting and Sculpture) in Bologna, Palazzo del Podestà, with Acquaviva, Giacomo Balla, Primo Conti, Tullio Crali...

Oil on Canvas "the Prohibited Reading" After Karel Ooms
Located in Los Angeles, CA
A Large Continental Oil on Canvas "The Prohibited Reading " after Karel Ooms (Belgium, 1845-1900). This beautiful executed painting depicts a historical scene of an old man and a young woman who are huddled over a bible. The pair is gazing in apparent concern or alarm, over the old man's shoulder, towards something outside of the picture. The scene is likely set in the 16th or 17th century when Protestants were prosecuted, amongst others, for reading the bible in the vernacular, a practice prohibited by the Catholic Church at the time. Signed (l/r) A. Ribas 15-12-913. Within a giltwood carved frame. circa: Probably Belgium, 1913.
Karel Ooms was born in Dessel on January 27, 1845 as the youngest son of a large peasant family. At school his extraordinary talent for drawing was discovered. When he was twelve his hometown provided financial support which allowed him to study at the Antwerp Academy of fine Arts.
One of his teachers at the Academy was Nicaise de Keyser, one of the key figures in the Belgian Romantic-historical school of painting and a painter of mainly history paintings and portraits. After graduating from the Academy 1865 Karel Ooms was welcomed with pomp in his home town Dessel. He painted two altarpieces for the local church Saint Nicolas, to express his gratitude to his city.
Karel Ooms settled as an independent artist in Antwerp around 1871. He quickly established a reputation as a portrait painter. In addition, he received commissions for religious paintings and history paintings. He gained particular recognition with two large paintings...
