"Icarus Falling, " Brilliant Painting by Genre Scene Artist Kyra Markham
About the Item
Although she is famous for her genre scenes such as "Bleeker Street Fire Hydrant" and "New Year's Eve in Greenwich Village," Kyra Markham began her career as an actress, gaining some renown for her work with Provincetown Players, and in Hollywood. However, she retained an interest in painting and printmaking all her life, and dedicated most of her life to art. Here in this painting, dating from 1959, Markham uses a brilliant palette of cerulean blues and pinks to create an ethereal backdrop for the doomed Icarus, who is falling and losing feathers as he drops. Somehow the painting seems more lovely than tragic, the viewer easily lost in the cloud patterns and arresting colors.
