Magnificent 18th Century Venetian Madonna

Dimensions in centimeters: CANVAS 69cm H x 51cm / FRAME 107cm H x 80cm. In art, a Madonna is a representation of Mary, either alone or with her child Jesus. These images are central icons for both the Catholic and Orthodox churches. The word is from Italian ma donna 'my lady' (archaic). The Madonna and Child type is very prevalent in Christian iconography, divided into many traditional subtypes especially in Eastern Orthodox iconography, often known after the location of a notable icon of the type, such as the Theotokos of Vladimir...

Antique Oil on Canvas Painting, Interior of an Inn with Dancing Peasants, 18th C
By David Teniers the Younger
Located in Dallas, TX
After the original 17th-century by the famed Flemish painter, David Teniers II (usually referred to as “David Teniers the Younger”, as his father David Teniers the Elder was also an accomplished painter), this fabulous painting depicts a vibrant scene, both in color and theme. Our version, which was painted in the 1700s, is by an unknown, but very talented artist. The painting is surrounded by a giltwood frame with two layers of beading. Both Teniers were known for developing the “peasant genre” or “tavern scene”, where members of the working class were shown actively celebrating life. The earthy tones of the interior of the inn (brown and beige) are offset by citizens in brightly colored attire consisting of green, red, black, and gray. The scene is divided into two rooms, with seven patrons (mostly men) gathered around a barrel table in front of a very large fireplace. Two of the men are playing cards and there are two tankards visible. The calmness of this group is a drastic difference from the 11 people gathered in the foreground. A man in blue stands on top of a wine barrel table...

An impressive and large scale painting on board of the Mother Mary holding the infant Jesus, each displayed wearing a crown with a golden sacred heart, probably Hungarian, the inscription underneath reads ‘Zdravas Kralovno’ in Slovak, which translates to the Latin Salve Regina or Hail, Queen, these are a reference to the Latin Hymn of the same name, which is traditionally thought to have originated in 11th century Germany, and specifically to the monk Hermann of Reichenau. Gallant Scene Painting by Philippe Mercier, 18th Century
Located in Lisbon, PT
An 18th century painting of a gallant scene in a park. Attributed with seal of painter's studio to Philippe Mercier (1689 to 1760) from the circle of the french painter Nicolas Lancret, a follower of the École of Antoine Watteau. Oil on canvas, in a fine carved giltwood frame. Frame: Width: 16,53 in (42 cm) Depth: 14,56 in (37 cm) Canvas: Width: 12,99 in (33 cm) Depth: 10,62 in (27 cm) Philippe Mercier (Berlin 1689 – London 1760) born in Berlin and studied at the Berlin Akademie with Antoine Pesne before traveling to Italy and France. By the time he arrived in London in 1716, had considerable familiarity with the work of contemporary French painters, particularly Watteau and his sophisticated style. Soon won Watteau patronage in court circles. In 1726 painted two important group portraits that can be seen as an introduction to English art - Baron Schultz and his friends (1725, Tate Gallery, London) and Viscount Tyrconnel with his family (1725-6, private collection). In 1729, Mercier was appointed Chief Painter to Frederick, Prince of Wales, and, a year later, keeper of his library, but they seem to have fallen away in the latter half of the 1730s, when he retired to the country, where painted several portraits for the Samwell family of Upton, Northants, and Hesilriges of Noseley, Warwicks. In 1739 Mercier moved to York, where he built up a considerable portrait practice among the leading families in the county. It was at this time that he made his greatest contribution to British painting, introducing and developing the 'extravagant image', a genre derived from Chardin as well as Watteau and 17th-century Dutch genre painting. Described by George Vertue as "bit of some conversational figures as large as life: vain plaisant Fantasies and habits: mixed modes very well done – and very approved", such works were frequently recorded and clearly enjoyed considerable success. Painted in the second half of the 1730s, the present work, An Allegory of Taste, is a fine example of this way of painting and its Rococo sensibility reveals the artist's affinities with contemporary French art...

Pair of Large 18th Century French Boiserie Overdoor Paintings
Located in Dallas, TX
Once installed architecturally in a chateau in Normandy, France, this large pair of overdoors was painted in the 1700s and executed in a technique known as verdaille. Verdaille utilizes various shades of green to achieve a mesmerizing monochromatic effect. This technique’s rich history traces back to the 12th century when it was initially employed to create stained glass for Cistercian monasteries, where colorful art was prohibited, making these overdoors not only aesthetically captivating but also a piece of living art history. Interestingly, there is a hand-written transport note on the back of one of the overdoors (see detail photo) that mentions the paintings were to be shipped to a Madame DeFrance in Paris, at the rue St. Honore corner of la rue Dufour (freight pre-paid). These exquisite pieces are encompassed by wood frames adorned with lavish foliate carvings, beautifully painted in a soothing French gray hue. Each overdoor encapsulates a unique musical scene that transports you to the heart of 18th-century Europe. In the first painting, a man plays the uilleann pipe, a unique instrument with a bellow-driven mechanism that distinguishes it from a bagpipe. The musician has quite an audience, as two women, one cradling a sheep, and four more sheep next to a dog have gathered nearby. In the second painting, witness a captivating moment of courtship as a gentleman kneels before a woman with a tambourine in her hands. He presents a long woodwind instrument, possibly a carnyx, while a faithful dog rests nearby amidst a backdrop of gardening tools. These stunning French verdaille overdoors were once part of a themed boiserie room (most likely green in color and centered around music). They can once again be used to create a theme above a pair of interior doors or they can be hung as a unique set of artwork.

Pair of 16th C Portraits of Turkish Ottoman Sultans, follower of Paolo Veronese.
Located in Leuven , BE
Portrait of Sultan Isa Çelebi (died 1403),identity inscribed in Latin. Portrait of Sultan Murad III (1546–1595), identity inscribed in Latin. The present paintings refer to the works attributed to a follower of Paolo Veronese in the Bayerische Staatsgemälde Sammlungen , Würzburg . The paintings are comparable and complementary to a set of 6 Turkish rulers sold in 2022 for 1,5 M. by Sothebys. Located at the crossroads of East and West, the Ottoman Empire absorbed a diverse range of influences, including Chinese, European, and Persian, to produce a distinctive and coherent artistic language throughout a range of decorative arts. Ottoman expansion into Eastern Europe and subsequent access to the silver mines of the Balkans between the 14th and 16th C. led to a rich and skilled tradition of Ottoman silverware, tiles, dishes, and other ceramic objects. From the 16th to 19th C. the production of decorative arts continued to flourish with the introduction of both rococo and baroque elements signalling an increasingly open attitude to all things European. The production of Orientalist paintings is rich in topographical landscapes of Istanbul, genre scenes, and portraits of Ottoman notables. Europe’s fascination with its powerful, Muslim neighbours inspired a wave of accounts and paintings of the Ottoman world. The taking of Constantinople in 1453 by the young Mehmet II ('The Conqueror’) not only sparked this interest, but the young Sultan himself, who invited European painters to his court, further fuelled this fashion. The period following his reign saw relations between the Republic of Venice and its powerful neighbour reach a state of relative calm, initiating a period of exchange and trade. The present portraits of the Sultans, depicted in three-quarter view and wearing a large turban and richly embroidered cloak...
