About the Item
Kelly finds inspiration pertaining to controversial topics through various literary pieces. She will then use some pages from the novel she has chosen as the canvas to paint her interpretation of the book. This painting titled "Indispensable Power" is an original charcoal and acrylic inspired by the book "The Quest" 2011. Her inspiration from this novel was the power of corruption that lies within, the inner struggle.
Art is the language I use to speak with honesty to the world around me. It is a mental, emotional, physical, and creative exercise in skill, design, and construction. The challenge is to incorporate myself as an individual then expand into our perception of the world as a society by creating an object that stands on its own while interacting with the viewer. As an artist, my goal is to learn new skills, techniques and expand my knowledge of the art world and the artists who have made it what it is so that I can create impact through art.
Humanity is the focus of my attention in the objects I build and the images I make. The art is very human but in a manner that is nearly unreal. It is intended to be a beautiful (not pretty) question mark conveyed and communicated figuratively. My work is an exercise in a subject I know but am not entirely comfortable with and will always question. Collectively we are all conditioned to define normal, pleasing, abnormal, and unacceptable by our respective cultures, whether or not we agree. I feel that my art both mirrors this and at the same time, challenges this by presenting the dualities in the concept, design, and materials used. My purpose is to make the viewer take the time to observe the art, process, and then come to their own interpretation of the work through their own set of experiences, beliefs, and assumptions. The reward is being able to do so and watch.
'There is not a single true work of art that has not in the end added to the inner freedom of each person who has known and loved it.' -Albert Camus
Biography
Kelley Devine is a Houston-based fine artist who works in a variety of media to explore issues of society and self. Devine received her bachelor's degree in art with an emphasis in sculpture at Southeastern Louisiana University. After graduation, she began to exhibit her works in national and local venues. Additionally, she co-founded several businesses, including an industrial coatings company, a multiple city distribution lifestyle magazine, and a bottled water company. Kelley then went on to work for the Houston Arts Alliance, managing special projects, before becoming a full-time artist. Currently, Devine is pursuing her master's in fine art at Houston Baptist University.
Devine describes herself as 'a mother, artist, entrepreneur, and avid cyclist' and says her art helps her communicate what she sees as the opposing forces within the human psyche. 'As a painter and a sculptor, I strive to incorporate the concept of how self-perception and internalization differ from the perceptions and assumptions of others, by combining materials, applications or images that are visually and psychologically contrary to one another.'
Today, Devine continues to show her work actively. She is a former member of the Sketchy Neighbors artist group and former participant in the John Palmers 2010 Escapist mentorship program. Highlights include the Red Bull Art of Can 2008, the Red Dot Art Fair 2009, and Additional Support group show for Spacetaker's inaugural gallery opening in 2010. Notable 2011 events include the Artist Project New York, Art Chicago, and Houston Fine Art Fair. In 2012 her work was exhibited at the Los Angeles Art Fair and later at Houston Fashion Week. 2014 included two solo shows, Face Face at Esperson Gallery, Unwhole at Nicole Longnecker Gallery, and a group show of national juried artists selected by Redbull at SCOPE during Art Basel Miami. 2015 highlighted paintings in Sight Insight a solo exhibition at Esperson Gallery. In 2016 Devine was included Trail of Art a monumental public art sculpture juried by Gus Kopriva and Chris Silkwood and held a solo show at Jack Meier Gallery benefiting the Navy SEAL Foundation. 2017 included three juried exhibitions in Corpus Christi, TX, Denver, CO and Ventura, CA. "Accent", Monumental Charcoal on Canvas Painting by Jessica Scott Felder
By Jessica Scott-Felder
Located in Hanover, MA
11 foot by 9 foot frame stretched charcoal on canvas painting by Jessica Scott-Felder titled "Accent" 2009.
Jessica utilizes drawings and installations with antique objects to transform spaces into psychological realms that are suggestive of maternal figures and ancestral and social narratives. Initially, the chairs represented matriarchal presence and have currently expanded to ancestry. Jessica’s work addresses issues in identity, heritage, culture, and society’s rapidly disintegrating connection to the past.
Jessica's grandmother's living room has been a focal point of her work. She is visually exploring the suggestive qualities of furniture placement. Many of the images were derived from “Last Year at Marienbad...

Mixed Media Painting by Steven Colucci
By Jackson Pollock
Located in New York City, NY
Steven Colucci’s iconoclastic approach to performance and the visual arts
have not only long blurred the boundaries between these disciplines, but have
challenged its most basic assumptions. The title of this show references a
most rudimentary dance move --the plié --and our assumptions of what to
expect in relation to this. Also the suggestion that we can simply press a
button and a preconceived outcome will be courteously delivered --a form of
prefabricated belief in itself. Steven Colucci’s artwork turns such basic
assumptions on their heads. Finding early inspiration in the New York school
of abstract expressionists such as Jackson Pollock with his action painting,
and then further by his professor --a then young Vito Acconci while studying
at the School of Visual Arts, Steven Colucci went from exploring the raw
existentialist experimentation of New York’s early painting and performance
scenes, to investigating the other end of the spectrum --the rigorously
measured and controlled disciplines of pantomime and ballet; studying in
Paris under the tutelage of world-famous Marcelle Marceau, and engaging
with the concepts of dramatic movement pioneer and intellectual Etienne
Decroux. Colucci has explained the difference between the extremes of
pantomime and dance as being that pantomime forces movement via an
internal capacity --movement directed inward to the core of one’s self --a
source requiring extreme mental and physical control. Dance by contrast is
an external expression; likewise requiring great precision, although instead
an extension of self or sentiment that projects outwardly. While such
historical ‘movement’ disciplines serve as foundation blocks for Steven’s
artistic explorations, it is the realm in between that he is best known for his
contributions --an experimental movement and performance art that
simultaneously honors, yet defiantly refutes tradition; rejecting a
compartmentalization regarding art and movement, yet incorporating its
elements into his own brand of experimental pastiche. Colucci’s performance
works manifest as eerily candy-coated and familiar, yet incorporate
unexpected jags of the uncanny throughout, exploiting a sort of coulrophobia
in the viewer; an exploration of a cumulative artifice that binds human
nature against its darker tendencies; highlighting traditions of artifice itself -
the fabricated systemologies that necessitate compartmentalization in the
first place.
It is evident in Steven Colucci’s paintings that he has established a uniquely
distinctive pictorial vocabulary; a strong allusion to --or moreso an extension
of --his performance works. Colucci’s paintings depict a sort of kinetic
spectrum, or as he refers to them “a technical expression of physicality and
movement”. Whereas the French performance and visual artist Yves Klein
used the human body as a “paint brush” to demarcate his paintings and
thereby signify a residue of performance, Colucci’s utilization of nonsensical
numbers and number sequences taken from dance scores, as well as heat-
induced image abstraction depicting traces of movement likewise inform his
vocabulary. In the strand of the choreographed, yet incorporating moments of
chance, Colucci’s paintings represent an over arching structure; a rhythm of
being and state, yet detail erratic moments --moments that denote a certain
frailty --the edge of human stamina. Colucci’s paintings dually represent a
form of gestural abstraction --and also the reverse of this --a unique
anthropomorphization of varying states of movement – that sometimes
present as a temperature induced color field, at others are juxtapositions of
movement and depictions of physical gestural images themselves. Colucci’s
use of vernacular and found materials such as cardboard evoke his mastery of
set design, and also reference a sort of collective experience of urbanity and
the ephemeral. Such contradictions seem to permeate not only Steven
Colucci’s artwork, but also are reflected in his person – one who grew up in
New York’s Bronx during a zeitgeist moment in visual and performing arts in
the 1960s – one who shifts with ease from happenings and experiments in
New York City, to his meticulously choreographed megaproductions at
Lincoln Center or starring in the Paris ballet...
