About the Item

A striking and most decorative pair of Italian 19th century Louis XVI st. gouaches in their original ebonized fruitwood and Mecca frames. Each gouache is framed within elegant ebonized fruitwood borders with fine mottled designs and lovely Mecca bands. The gouaches depict the charming port of Naples where boats and personages dressed in period attire gather and fish while boats pass by. In the background Mount Vesuvius can be seen erupting amidst the beautiful Italian countryside. Stunning colors depicting the fabulous sun setting over the bay. Mount Vesuvius is a volcano located on the Gulf of Naples in Campania, Italy. It is best known for its eruption in AD 79 that led to the burying and destruction of the Roman cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum, Oplontis and Stabiae, as well as several other settlements. Vesuvius has erupted many times since and is the only volcano on the European mainland to have erupted within the last hundred years. Today, it is regarded as one of the most dangerous volcanos, because of the 3,000,000 people living nearby, making it the most densely populated volcanic region in the world.
