Farmyard Scene with Chickens, Medium: Oil on canvas, Signed: L.J. Cruise, 1911, Criuise (1861-1945), Berks County, Pennsylvania Dimensions: Frame: 35 inches high x 55 31/2 inches wide; sight: 29 inches high x 48 3/4 inches wide This oil painting by Bucks County artist Louis J. Cruise depicts a farmyard scene. A chicken emerges from a farm building, with eight other chickens and a cockerel below. All of the birds are either standing or pecking on the straw pile, as are three other small birds. To the back right of the painting is a wood fence, beyond which is a grass field and woods. The painting is framed in a wide gilt frame. Cruise was a prolific artist who painted a variety of subjects, including landscapes, still lifes, and portraits. Pierre-Victor GALLAND (1822-1892) ‘Les Quatre Eléments’ Four, oil on canvas. France, Circa 1873. Each painting depicting one of the cardinal elements personified as a female figure in the presence of its most evident attribute. Painted with strong light and colour. Earth panel depicts one of the four elements in a compelling fashion with an ascendent female figure robed in flowing drapery with foot and arm extended reaching skyward: each with attendant putti below. Earth is shown swathed in robes of greens and white, with a fanciful foliate headdress of lush leaves and bullrushes. Air leaps effortlessly into the sky draped in blush pink and holding a slender fruiting bough. Fire ascends dramatically into the sky holding forth a flaming torch and draped in bright burnished orange and grey, her image seemingly lit from a fire kindled below by an ignipotent putto. Water suitably draped in billowing azure blue with a translucent undergarment, holds aloft a bubble representing water is portrayed with shimmering translucent wings, an attendant winged putto pulling at her hem. Under the Second Empire, Haussmann’s transformation of Paris went hand in hand with the construction of luxurious mansions for the new haute bourgeois. Gallards extensive work for wealthy patrons such as Lionel de Rothschild and Edouard André, led him to become one of Paris’s most admired and sought-after decorative artists. His fame quickly spread and led him to carry out projects outside the capital for, among others, Baron von Derwies in Nice, Prince Narischkine in Saint Petersburg and William Vanderbilt in the United States. Stoddard from his volume "Portfolio of Photographs of Famous Cities, Scenes and Paintings" published by the Werner Company of Chicago. The scene is executed on a dense mahogany panel with gently bevelled rear edges, set inside carefully painted black framed lines hidden just behind the edge of the frame. The precise detail in the walls, the horse, the carriage and the seated riders is riveting and is much assisted by the photograph behind the oil. A very decorative neoclassical 18th century Danish portrait painting of a young boy feeding a parrot with cherries. Signed by Erik Pauelsen and dated 1788. Oil on canvas, lined and framed. Measurements of the frame: 78 cm x 93 cm. Erik Pauelsen (1749–1790) was a Danish painter. He is most notable for his landscapes and was also a popular portraitist. From an early age he had his mind set on becoming an artist. He travelled to Copenhagen and studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts from 1770-1777 where he won the large silver medal and the small gold medal in 1775 and finally the large gold medal in 1777 together with the Academy's travel scholarship. He travelled to Rome by way of Hamburg, Düsseldorf and Paris and visited Dresden and Berlin on his way back. During his travels he became a member of several foreign art academies and was granted the title of professor in Düsseldorf. After his return to Denmark, he became a member of the art academy, but was passed over for the post of professor by Jens Juel...
