Doris and Richard Beer (1898-1967 and 1893-1959 respectively) produced a well-known series of watercolor miniatures featuring popular Nantucket scenes. Working at their Wharf Head Studio on Old North Wharf for 18 years, the couple worked together on these copyrighted creations, photo-duplicating Doris's line sketch and Doris and Richard completing the watercolor.
A native New Yorker, Doris studied at the Art Students League, Cooper Union, and with Arthur Dow at Columbia University. She developed a successful career designing theatrical scenery and costumes in New York, Newport, and later for the Straight Wharf Theater on Nantucket. Richard spent the summers of his childhood in ’Sconset. A graduate of Hamilton College, he served for ten years as American consul in posts in Budapest, England, Havana, and Canada. Extremely realistic yet deceptively unassuming depiction of a rustic and weathered grey wood door reveals impressive touches, textures, and techniques the longer and closer one looks.
Narrow black gap between door and frame offers a glimpse at the canvas upon which a thin layer of acrylic polymer has been applied to simulate the look and feel of real wood grain. Finished with glossy oil paint glazes that provide color, shading, and highlights to the wood, doorknob, and other delightfully discoverable details such as exposed nail heads.
While the artist’s keen eye, skillful technique, and inventive use of media look great when seen from straight on, they become even more impressive when viewed obliquely and one can appreciate his meticulous recreation of naturally textured materials.
Paglia’s distinctive logotype-like signature and date ("'80") is at lower right. Verso with title, media, and name written on canvas, as well as two paper tags from a previous unknown gallery describing the same. In original varnished dark brown wood frame.

“Los Angeles native Don Paglia is currently Emeritus Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the UCLA School of Medicine. He served as Fulbright Senior Research Scholar in Sub-Saharan Africa and continues to conduct research on medical problems threatening rhinoceroses and other exotic wildlife.
Initially a self-taught artist, he received formal training in multiple media under the singular influences of UCLA’s Joe Blaustein and Jan Stussy. He was appointed to the NASA Art Program to document the 1983-84 mission of space shuttle Columbia. George Howell Gay was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and educated in Chicago under Paul Brown and Henry Elkins, and in 1889 moved to Bronxville, New York. He worked in all media, but was especially fond of watercolor, which allowed him to capture the transparency of the ocean and the luminous qualities of sunlight and clouds. Gay worked along the Northeastern coast from Rhode Island to Maine, but also painted summer and winter landscapes throughout New England.

There Are Some Imperfections. Some Scuffs Along the boarders and see also corners of this painting and a few chips as well, see pics. I must mention, there is are two tiny u shaped flap like tears. Number one, is to the far left middle boarder edge. The u shaped flap like tear has not been completely torn away from the canvas itself, as you can see for yourself, see pic. Number two, the u shaped flap like tear is on the top boarder middle edge, the flap is still attached to the painting and can be placed back, I try to keep vintage pieces like this in it's original condition as we go about our digs for modern design, see pic. Both are smaller then a dime.
