The saint is depicted in front of the Virgin holding the Child portrayed with the wedding ring in his hand, enriched with a precious stone. According to the Golden Legend, Catherine of Alexandria was a very beautiful young woman, the only daughter of the king of Costa, who had refused to marry the emperor Maxentius because she was a Christian and devoted to Christ. Maxentius, unable to convince her to sacrifice to idols, had sent to call the wisest men and fifty philosophers and orators who presented themselves and tried to divert her from faith in Christ. Catherine, however, played so well that she was able to convert them, arousing the anger of the emperor who condemned them to the stake. Catherine, however, who had criticized Maxentius for the new persecutions against the Christians, was sentenced to prison without food. Abandoned for twelve days, she was fed by a dove sent by God. Maxentius then decided to execute her with the torture of the toothed wheel become her attribute iconographic; but by divine intervention this broke and the young was saved. Finally, she was beheaded and milk flowed from her neck. Catherine’s princely status is witnessed here by her sumptuous dress. The iconography of the mystical marriage was born in the fifteenth century, probably because the traditional iconographic attribute, the wheel, was sometimes so small as to look like a ring, and refers to a vision that will always remain present in the mind and heart of the saint. In Heaven she appeared to her, among the Angels and Saints, Christ the Child, in the arms of the Virgin. He took a precious ring that the Virgin Mary handed to her and put it in her finger, saying "I, your Creator and Saviour, take you in marriage; confident that you will keep you pure until you celebrate your eternal wedding with me, in Paradise" When Catherine was laughing, she found in her finger the same ring that she had seen and had in Heaven, and she considered herself forever the bride of Christ.

The two valuable paintings, made in oil on canvas, depict landscapes with architectural whims animated by some figures. The architectural whim, an artistic genre that has made its way in Italian painting since the seventeenth century, is characterized by the representation of fantastic architectures or inventions of perspective type, sometimes combined with elements drawn freely from reality.
In the works we observe large arches, colonnades and friezes fallen into disrepair, placed in perspective in order to create a greater depth, are inhabited by spontaneous vegetation that partly covers the top. Around other architectural elements of classic taste, such as sarcophagi and vases, move and balance the composition. Greenery dyes the ground, which fades on the horizon into plains with some small and distant buildings, while some rocky mountains are lost far away, creating a scenic backdrop that emphasizes and amplifies the effect of the perspective escape line of buildings.
Some figures of gentlemen who entertain in speeches, accompanied by a dog, other travellers and characters from rural life enliven the composition.
It highlights a remarkable pictorial quality with which the artist traces the characters and the ruins and a bright and well-balanced color, played on delicate tones and in harmony with each other.
Stylistically the works are certainly attributable to the Italian painter Gaetano Ottani (Italy, Bologna, 1708 - Turin, 1801).
Gaetano Ottani was born in Bologna in 1708. Unfortunately, the artist still lacks a monographic study. The date of death by many still erroneously indicated in 1808 is instead 14 January 1801 when the artist was 92 years old. He was therefore born in 1708, and not in 1720-24 as many report (for the recording of the act of death to the Municipality of Turin, cf. Historical Archives of the Municipality of Turin, Rubrics of the Acts of Death, vol. 37: Thursday, January 15, 1801 "Gaetano Ottani - 92 - old age - S. Filippo" is preserved among the documents of the parish of San Filippo di Torino).
Ottani studied at the Accademia Clementina. He had a complex career as a set designer, as a painter and as a tenor, much appreciated in Italy. He devoted himself mainly to easel painting, and in particular to the genre of caprice, often with views of ruins and fantasy marinas full of details, night visions on colonnades. He first took as an example Pietro Paltronieri, the Mirandolese; to the maturation of the style, he had to concur the study of known artists in the journeys undertaken as an opera singer. He was very influenced by the great scenographer Ferdinando Galli Bibiena.

Orientalist style works became very popular in the 19th Century, and the tradition continued into the early 20th Century, when this fine porcelain plaque was produced. Manufactured by famed German firm KPM, the plaque was retailed in New York by Gilman Collamore & Co., who imported high-end works of porcelain and glass. The plaque still bears the retailer's label to the reverse reading 'Gilman Collamore & Co, Union Sq. NY'.
The plaque is rectangular in shape, and portrays a young girl, swathed in rich, red draped clothing, reaching upward to give food to a white dove perched on a wire. The girl, her hair bound up in the Orientalist fashion, wears an armband as well as hoop earrings. The interior in which the scene is set is hung with luxurious textiles and decorated with gilt detailing.
The plaque is housed in a giltwood frame and is marked to the reverse with the sceptre mark of KPM porcelain, together with the retailer's label. The reverse also bears a written inscription reading 'Orientalisches Mädchen / L. Sturm', the title translating to 'Oriental girl...

Artists Biography:
Born in Hadlow, Kent in 1834, he died at Leatherhead, Surrey in 1913, aged 78. He was trained at the Royal Academy of Arts during 1853 -57 where he won the medal for 'The best drawing from the Life' in both 1854 and 1857. He actively exhibited between 1854 and 1890. He had 30 paintings exhibited at the Royal Academy and specialised in Highland Cattle and general genre paintings. He was also an accomplished portrait painter.
He has paintings in the permanent exhibitions at Sunderland, York and Leicester Art Galleries and also in the Long Room at Lords Cricket...
