Mughal Indian Miniature
Located in New York, NY
This Mughal miniature was painted at one of the princely courts of India. It depicts a raven-haired princess in a gold-trimmed saffron-colored silk sari. Under a glowering evening sky she dawdles on a white marble terrace, with a pet fawn on a leash, before a landscape dotted with buildings nestled amongst trees beyond a river. Her hair, falling loosely about her shoulders, rather than carefully dressed on her head, indicates that she is a maiden. The overall mood is one of expectancy. Perhaps walking a pet and catching an evening breeze is a pretext to escape palace scrutiny for a lovers’ assignation. In Mughal India tender sentiments were a bridge to the erotic – and if this seems contradictory, so too is the balance of realism and caricature, and naturalism with the schematic. Both are hallmarks of miniatures painted in this place and time. The earliest Mughal Indian miniatures date to the 16th century. They were inspired by those painted at the refined Moslem courts of the neighboring Persian empire. They incorporated figures in spite of the Moslem faith’s proscription against depicting the human form. Such was the nature of sophisticated courtly life everywhere that beauty and pleasure trumped systems of morality. This was no less the case at the provincial Indian courts, where our miniature, marked by a charming pictorial naiveté, was most likely painted. Yet the artist was undeniably accomplished. His command of perspective, introduced by Jesuit missionaries in the 17th century, is seen in the landscape, which rolls back to a distant horizon, contrary to the flat two-dimensional ones following Indian-painting traditions. And if Mughal artists were influenced by Western art, the compliment was returned by Rembrandt and Sir Joshua Reynolds, among others, who collected Indian miniatures (as did, perhaps, Giovanni Bellini who painted in Mughal style the famous miniature of a Persian man...

17th Century Christ in Chains Painting Oil on Canvas
Located in Milan, IT
17th century Christ in chains Oil on canvas, 95 x 71 cm Frame 110 x 84 cm The figurative tradition representing Christ with chained hands can be traced back to the early Middle Ages, when an iconography of His pains spread widely. The need to translate the Passion into images aimed to raise awareness of the forgiveness that has occurred for all men, consequent to the Crucifixion. This painting depicts the moment before the audience before Pilate. Christ has not yet been cruelly mocked by the soldiers, despite the fact that he is already wearing the crown of thorns and the purple...

Mary Queen of Scots period painting 16th.Century
Located in Perth, GB
This painting very much of the period of George Jamieson although with a contintal flavour It is worth considering this artist , He was born in Aberdeen, where his father, Andrew Jamesone, was a stonemason. Jamesone attended the grammar school near his home on Schoolhill and is thought to have gone on to further education at Marischal College.[2] Legend has it that Jamesone once studied under Rubens in Antwerp with Anthony van Dyck.[3] This is, however, yet to be proven as his name does not appear to be noted on the Guild registers of the town.[4] Since Rubens was exempt from registering pupils, the absence of Jamesone's name does not mean that the painter definitely did not study there. Mary Erskine Jamesone certainly did complete an apprenticeship under the supervision of his uncle, John Anderson, who was a popular decorative painter in Edinburgh at the beginning of the seventeenth century.[5] Jamesone finished this training in 1618. He is not recorded as being in Aberdeen again until 1620. If the Scotsman had gone to Antwerp, it would have had to have been between the years of 1618 to 1620. Career Whilst in Aberdeen, Jamesone made a name for himself painting portraits of local academics and scholars from the city's two feuding colleges: King's and Marischal. In 1633, when Charles I made his grand royal visit to Edinburgh, Jamesone rose from local to national fame. For this occasion the painter was asked to decorate a highly elaborate triumphal arch with the portraits of all the past kings of Scotland.[6] He was also given the honour of painting the portrait of Charles himself. It has been said that the king was so pleased with the result that he gave Jamesone a ring off his own finger as a reward.[7] After hearing of the King's approval, many of the Scottish gentry desired to be painted by the now highly reputable George Jamesone.[3] One of his finest examples is that of Mary Erskine which is on display at the National Gallery of Scotland. Jamesone had homes and studios in Aberdeen (on Schoolhill opposite St. Nicholas Kirk) and in Edinburgh (on the Royal Mile right next door to John Knox House). Having two bases allowed him to meet the demands of hundreds of patrons from the north to the south of the country. Jamesone died in Edinburgh in 1644 and was buried in Greyfriars Kirkyard in the centre of the city. The grave is largely illegible but lies on the east wall of the original churchyard.[8] Legacy Lady Janet Stewart Jamesone's pupil, John Michael Wright...

17th Century Still Life Painting Oil on Canvas Area of Ruoppolo
By Giovan Battista Ruoppolo
Located in Milan, IT
Area of ??Giovanni Battista Ruoppolo (Naples, 1629 - 1697) Still life with fruit and little bird Measures: Oil on canvas, 62 x 83 cm The still life in question shows juicy citrus fruits, among which we can recognize oranges and cedars, together with red berries scattered on the ground. A cheerful little bird rests on the edge of a terracotta pot in which some pink-mottled carnations grow. The landscape that can be observed all around is veiled by clouds and shaded by shrubs, while in the distance there is a green hill. Dominating the foreground and standing out from the dark background is the fruit which, lush and juicy, stands out in the vivacity of the colors in contrast with the dark background. The full-bodied brushstroke that delineates the wrinkled peel of citrus fruits to restore the realism of the fruit, just as the green leaves of the stems softly folded on themselves are sketched with extreme truthfulness, they ascribe the work to a painter working in the circle of Giovanni Battista Ruoppolo. Ruoppolo is a Neapolitan artist, specialized in the genre of still life, indeed De Dominici himself in his Lives of Neapolitan painters, sculptors and architects recognizes him a primary role in the Neapolitan school of the genre. He studied, together with Giuseppe Recco (1634 -?), In the workshop of Paolo Porpora (1617 - 1673). He painted almost exclusively fruit and flower paintings...

Circa 1700 Japanese Screen Pair, Cranes & Pines, Kyoto Kano School
Located in Kyoto, JP
Pines and Cranes Anonymous. Kyoto Kano School. Late 17th/early 18th centuries, circa 1700. Pair of six-panel Japanese folding screens. Ink, gofun, pigment and gold leaf on paper. This bold composition presents two pine trees extending to the left and right across a gold leaf background. One tree is silhouetted against a green ground, golden clouds obscuring its true size, the other stretches across a stylized waterway. The pines are paired with Manchurian cranes with red crests and snow white plumage. Both have been highly auspicious motifs in East Asia since Chinese antiquity. Here the artist utilized fluid and instinctive ink brushstrokes to define the trunk, branches and tail feathers, in strong contrast to the precision and sharp angularity of the crane’s legs and beaks. The adoption of this vast metallic painting support required an unerring sense of design and composition, so that the negative space surrounding motifs could imply context for the otherwise floating pictorial elements. The brushwork detailing the trunks of the pines, the exaggerated dimensions of the pine trees and the strength and dynamism of the composition are all reminiscent of Kano Eitoku...

Large 18th Century French Oil on Canvas Painting Depicting a Hunt Scene
Located in Dallas, TX
This large (110 inches high) oil on canvas painting depicts a successful hunter, with his felled game displayed near his retriever dogs. Our hunter is leaning against a stone pedestal, clad in blue coat and pants with his rifle beneath his right hand. The man is wearing a gold cap with red fabric attached to it and has a sword on his left hip. Three retriever dogs stand to the hunter’s left, while a fourth sits in front of him (the man appears to be motioning to this dog with his left hand). An orange terra cotta vase adorned with spiral fluting sits on top of a molded plinth at the top of the pedestal. Ivy has begun to wrap around the vase, which also is festooned with green drapery. On a ledge at the base of the pedestal is the felled game: a rabbit and three birds. The hunting display is surrounded by numerous trees and shrubbery. Mountains and a lake can be seen in the background, beneath a blue sky with pink and orange clouds and birds flying. Based on the size and vertical orientation, the scene was most likely part of a French boiserie room...

17th Century Penitent Magdalene Painting Tempera on Parchment by Genovese
By Giovanni Battista Castello
Located in Milan, IT
Giovanni Battista Castello, known as "Il Genovese" (1547-1637) Penitent Magdalene Tempera on parchment, 21 x 17 cm Frame 26 x 22 cm The precious tempera painting on parchment is to be referred to the hand of the painter Giovanni Battista Castello (1547-1637), called “il Genovese” to distinguish him from the homonymous contemporary, architect and painter, called “il Bergamasco”. Older brother of Bernardo, a famous painter of late Ligurian Mannerism, he began his activity in the field of religious goldsmithing, to which he soon joined the art of miniature, an art to which he ended up dedicating himself completely and with greater satisfaction, bringing it back to a success and to a disclosure that he had not known since the Middle Ages and which now found incentive and justification in the spiritual and cultural climate of the Counter-Reformation. In the sources he is cited as self-taught; However, his assiduous frequentation of Luca Cambiaso...

17th Century Still Life with Birds Painting Oil on Canvas by Victors
By Jacobus Victors
Located in Milan, IT
Attr. Jacobus or Iacomo Victors (Amsterdam c. 1640 - 1705) Still life with birds Oil on canvas, 112 x 133 cm The still life examined here is a rare example of the simultaneous presence of live and dead animals in a single composition. On two rocky levels different ornithological species are neatly arranged, reproduced with the utmost fidelity and adherence to life. Mallards, doves, sparrows and a partridge placed on their backs can be recognized. The soft mantles with different chromatic tones, with the characteristic streaks and spots of color, together with the precise investigation of the various ornithological typologies, denote an observation of the real datum typical of the seventeenth-century Flemish tradition. Another mallard, this time alive, seems to have just settled on the rock, as if to observe the rich composition moving its neck. Its characteristic colors, the bright green of the head and the upper part of the neck, the yellow of the beak and the orange of the legs characterize the painting and capture the viewer's attention. The flight of the dove in the foreground is splendid, seen from above, the virtuosic pose and the brightness of its feathers, in an elegant modulation of grays tending to white, denote the stylistic quality of this work. It was probably created by a Flemish artist working in Italy in the second half of the seventeenth century: close analogies can be found with the game of Jacobus Victor...

17th-18th Century View of the Temple of Minerva Painting Oil on Canvas
Located in Milan, IT
Painter active in Rome in the 18th-19th century. View of the temple of Minerva Medica Oil on canvas, 65 x 78 cm - with frame 71.5 x 85 cm The painting bears a traditional attribution to François Marius Granet (Aix-en-Provence, 1775 - 1849). The painter was a pupil of David but from 1802 to 1819 he lived in Rome, as evidenced by a series of paintings depicting views of the city and especially of the Roman countryside (Ponte San Rocco in Tivoli, 1810-20, MoMA, New York), and then return there between 1825 and 1830. In the Eternal City Granet devoted himself to landscape painting, inspired by the landscape painting of Gaspard Dughet and Van Lint...

Early 17th Century Roman School Praying Madonna Painting Oil on Canvas
Located in Milan, IT
Roman school, late 16th-early 17th century Praying Madonna Oil on canvas, 81 x 69 cm Frame 83 x 95.5 cm A divine whiteness reverberates with vibrant luster on the maphorion of the present Virgin. The palpable iridescence that structures the thin rosaceous garment, woven with the same fresh light, produces a slight rustle when she takes her hands off. The Madonna in fact takes a prayerful pose, opening her palms to underline her fervent ecstatic intention; the white neck is rendered with perishable fullness of pigments, like the hands, perfectly alive, and the very shiny eyes. With fine shrewdness the artist of the present styles the Virgin's hair with thin white ribbons, exacerbating the purity. An evocative light falls gently on the bust, a materialized sign of divine glory. The present can be traced back to the late Mannerist climate that prevailed in the capital after the emanation of the Tridentine council (1545-1563). The late Mannerist licenses that can still be seen there, such as the intense lyricism in the stylistic code adopted by the artist, are innervated in the new basic catechetical intent, which at the end of the century produced a certain figurative rigorism. The present, however, still responds to that extraordinary Roman dynamism that raised the capital to a bulwark for the entire mannerist lesson, matched only by a second artistic center, the Florentine one. The engaging carriage of the Virgin reflects the contemporary examples of Giuseppe Valeriano (1542-1596), a Jesuit painter, returning in the Marriage of the Virgin of the Roman Church of Jesus, as well as in the Madonna of Sorrows in the Recanati Altarpiece, equal ardor. But it is in the Assumption of the Virgin painted in four hands with Scipione Pulzone...

17th Century Still Life with Fruits Painting Oil on Canvas by Paoletti
Located in Milan, IT
Paolo Paoletti (Padua, 1671 - Udine, 1735) Still Life with Fruits on a Shelf Oil on canvas, 53.5 x 81 cm Expert opinion Dr. Gianluca Bocchi The still life in question is referable to the hand of Paolo Paoletti (1671 - 1735). Born in Padua, but settled in Udine when he was not yet twenty, the artist was hosted here for many years at the Caiselli counts, in whose palace an entire room was decorated with his works. Between 1708 and 1715 he appears in the Fraglia dei pittori di Venezia, for which he paid the registration in 1712. The stay in Venice was of a certain importance for his artistic maturation, since he was able to frequent the stimulating international circles of the Lagoon. His allegories of the seasons and still lifes were mostly intended for the wall decorations of Friulian stately homes among which the Attimis, the Concina, the Giacomelli, the Morelli de Rossi, the del Torso and the Valentinis are mentioned. These compositions mainly depicting edible kinds such as vegetables, fruit, meats and cheeses were often enriched with flowers and sometimes framed by architectural backdrops or landscape backgrounds. The marked descriptive taste that characterizes them is similar to that of the samples of Bartolomeo Bimbi...

Japanese Screen Painting, circa 1700 'Horses' by Kano Tanshin
Located in Kyoto, JP
Horses Kano Tanshin Morimasa (1653-1718) Two-panel tea-ceremony Japanese screen or furosaki Ink on gold leaf, late 17th-early 18th century Measures: H 55 cm x W 182 cm The Kano school was closely aligned with the warrior class in Japan. The samurai, who lived in a closed and rigid hierarchical society established by the Shogunate, were drawn to the energy and freedom horses symbolize; Kano school artists commonly depicted the equine creatures as they are here, in unfettered and carefree family groups. China originally introduced horse paintings to Japan; the works typically focused on capturing the essence of horses in their various environments and often involved integrating human figures into the images. Kano Tanshin Morimasa (1653-1718) was the son of Kano Tanyu...

18th Century Madonna with Child Adored by Two Saints Paintings Oil on Canvas
Located in Milan, IT
Giovanni Giacomo Figari (Desenzano del Garda, 1739-1809) Madonna and Child adored by San Francesco di Paola and San Gregorio Magno (About 1765) (2) Oil on panel, 41 x 22.5 - with frame 46.7 x 27.5 x 3.2 cm Expertise Prof. Sava The softly collected and intimate dimension suggested by the present pair of paintings underlines, together with the saints appearing in adoration, the totally private dimension of the order. The saints chosen at the feet of the Madonna and Child are in fact Francesco di Paola and Gregorio Magno, immediately recognizable by the wise features, by the Franciscan habit and by the crosier supported by a putto, the other by the triple crown placed on the ground as a sign of respect. Most likely made as ex votos, as a tribute to the patrons or as preparatory models for two altarpieces, if the saints were to reflect their names, the paintings are offered for specular and meditated composition. An inflamed colorism lights up the veils of the Madonna, enhancing their prominent position with respect to the saint in her presence, and warming the remaining part of the composition with sweet intimacy.
