"Terminal Market, Bronx" Large WPA-Period Mural of New York Scene

One of the finest WPA period murals we have offered, this scene of the Bronx market with sellers and buyers crowding around a subway stop and a rising cluster of buildings to one side was painted by Morris Sirota in 1934. Like the periods best murals, it depicts a lively, energetic scene of wives and mothers purchasing watermelon and produce, considering lengths of fabric for the home, and exchanging news and gossip with friends and neighbours. Aspects of the painting have a stylized, Art Deco quality, and other aspects such as the apartment buildings rising in the upper left-hand corner, show the influence of Cubism. Sirota died young, at the age of 33, during the Second World War, so his works are extremely scarce. The medium is oil on canvas; dimensions include the frame.
