Landscape with Mill and Pastoral, Gouache on Paper
Located in Paris, FR
Two Romantic paintings depicting a country landscape with mill, and a pastoral scene with shepherds and peasants dancing or discussing. The pastoral, or bucolic, scenes depict life in an idealized manner, with schepherds herding livestock around open areas of land according to seasons and the changing availability of water and pasture. Pastoral scenes were very popular in the 18th century litterature, music and art, in line with Rousseau's ideas in favour of the original harmony between man and nature.
