Provenance: Peyton Wright Gallery, Santa Fe, NM 2012 Private Sale, Baltimore Antique Show, Baltimore, MD Chrisitie’s Auctions (with verso auction labels) Description: The town of Pomata, situated above Lake Titicaca in the highlands of Peru, was once a popular place for Christian pilgrimage. In this painting, Our Lady of Pomata is dressed in lavish garments and adorned with precious materials. This type of iconic image, found throughout Latin America, is known as a statue painting. This Virgen de Pomata is crowned with a jeweled diadem sprouting plumes, and is surrounded by an arch of flowers. She holds the Christ Child in her left hand and a delicate bunch of flowers in her right. Her gown is richly embroidered with gold and red embellishments. A trio of cherubs is depicted at her feet, and two small, elaborately dressed angels flank her on both sides. Pearls were among the sensational finds of the Spanish in the New World, and swags of them, caught with huge rosettes, adorn the figure. The profusion of roses, which not only surround the Virgen but also adorn her hair, alludes to the mysteries of the rosary, in keeping with European tradition. It may also refer to the canonization of Saint Rose of Lima in 1671, an event that was perceived as a triumph in a region that sought to elevate its merits as a completely evangelized area, while also celebrating its distinctness in relation to the Old World. Another recognizable attribute of the Virgin of Pomata is the trio of white feathers sprouting from her crown. The uniquely indigenous adornment of fluffy white plumes represent theological virtues of faith and purity, and seem to have come from the zuri, a mythical bird of pre-Hispanic origins.
