1787 Engraved Portrait of King Edward I - Hammer of the Scots

About the Item

An engraved portrait of Edward I, also known as Edward Longshanks and the Hammer of the Scots, who was King of England from 1272 to 1307. The text beneath the image indicates that the engraving is based on the remains of an ancient statue of King Edward I, which was over the gate of Caernarvon Castle, a significant location as Edward I was responsible for the construction of several large castles in Wales to maintain his control over the region. Edward I is known for his military campaigns and efforts to subjugate Wales and Scotland, leading to several wars and conflicts during his reign. His moniker, the Hammer of the Scots, comes from his campaigns against the Scots and their resistance leaders, like William Wallace and later Robert the Bruce. The portrait was published as directed by the act on May 1st, 1787, which suggests a deliberate effort to comply with copyright registration laws of the time.
