About the Item

This handcolored antique print, titled 'L'Epervier rayé', depicts a sharp-shinned hawk (Accipiter striatus), also known as a sharpie. The hawk is portrayed in a poised stance, perched on a branch, with its body angled towards the viewer, showcasing the bird's sleek profile. The plumage is intricately detailed, displaying the bird's characteristic barred underparts and finely streaked breast, with the wings and back rendered in a muted gray-brown that provides camouflage in its natural habitat. The hawk's intense gaze is directed forward, capturing the predatory focus for which this species is known. Noted on the print are the words 'L'Epervier rayé', 'Accipiter Striatus', 'pl. 14', marking the name of the bird in French and Latin, as well as the plate number in the series. The names 'Pretre pinx', 'Langlois sculp.', and 'Bouquet' are present, denoting the painter, the engraver, and the individual who finished the piece by hand, respectively. This print is part of 'Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux de l'Amerique Septentrionale' by Louis Jean Pierre Vieillot, dating back to circa 1807. The condition of the print is reflective of its age; it exhibits some foxing and staining across the surface, and the paper has taken on a creamy tone indicative of the passage of time. The left edge appears to have a tear or significant wear. Nonetheless, the detail and coloration of the hawk remain vibrant and clear, emphasizing the enduring craftsmanship of the period. This print is an exquisite representation of 19th-century ornithological study and illustration, emphasizing the sharp-shinned hawk as a living creature within its ecosystem.
